:D Just got my trusty and much loved 300TE-24 through MOT with no faults, and extremely low emissions. With another kid on the way, this car is really going to suit me for several more years if I can lower the fuel bill (and maybe lighten my heavy right foot  )

Has anyone done a LPG conversion? And what sort of price... I'd prefer to spend not too much more than a grand... can you get DIY kits for a competent home mechanic?

Advice/suggestions appreciated.

Yeah, thanks, i saw that one too, but thats for a 4 cylinder 200, poss with carb?

Mine is a 6 cyl 24 valve fuel injected 300... I guess some bits would fit but all the important stuff is pretty unlikely I'd have thought.

I'm really looking for some sort of kit... obviously i'll search using Google etc but would be interested in people's recommendations and experiences.

I've got a 300TE with LPG and it is great: 243.876 miles on the clock and sailed through the MOT 1st time.

The old single point LPG kits which basically just flood the Air intake with gas are (I've heard) a reasonably easy fix and you can get them off ebay because they fit any car.

The newer sequential LPG actually bore a hole into the cylinders so the L{PG actually follows the petrol route. This obviously aint so easy!

I am no expert but if you look at the bidders for cheap knackered LPG cars on ebay they are worth contacting for more info

I had my E200 K converted at a cost of £2K. I shopped around quite a bit first and had various quotes from £1100 upwards. I decided to go with a company I felt comfortable with despite the extra cost. Like you I looked around on Ebay and the web and found you can buy kits from about £700 for multipoint systems.

So far I have done about 18,000 miles on gas and it has been OK I do quite a few miles in a year so reckon I'll get my investment back in about one year.

I think if I were to do it again I would most likely get a kit and do the job myself, it isn't that complicated and you can get suppliers who will inspect the installation and supply a certificate (needed for your insurance)

If you need any more info just ask

hi alistair,
as last two posts, go the multi point system, single point can starve last cylinder in line and cause lots of problems due to weak mixture. unfortunately multi point a lot more expensive. most insurance comanies wil require completion certificate. have just sold my e240 which i had lpg'd at 66k when i bought it, it had 108k when sold but was starting to give quite a few problems due to elec issues, whether due to kit or not hard to say but dealer couldn't always get proper reading as wiring cut into. in the end it was trailered away as it would not start, my feeling was that the relay which switch from petrol to gas failed when in gas mode, didn't reset and therefore wouldn't start on gas.
the car did run smoother on gas than petrol and in the five years was mostly pleaased with it.

Thanks chaps, that's great info. I'll look into this and report back if go ahead. LPG s popular in Australia where I come from, eg taxi's are large family sized standard cars converted to LPG and reputedly do huge mileages as LPG is supposed to be kinder on engines. Diesel is rare in cars there.

IIRC as LPG is a dry fuel it is worse for engines, it also makes them run hotter. There are a few threads on it here if you have a search.
