HI Fellas.

Does anyone know about how easy on difficult it is to convert an E320 1993 to lpg..
I know some would say its not the ideal candidate for a conversion but you could say that about most cars..
I have found some resorces online for conversions but none specific to the E320. I am a gas fitter by trade, albeit for natural gas - but I wouldnt find it too difficult to install a diy conversion kit if the price is right..

Any info / advice especially from those already converted would be much appeciated...

Thanks in advance.

I looked into this briefly a while back, but dropped it when I found out MB don't sanction LPG conversions. There has to be a reason other than them wanting us to buy petrol in copious amounts. Good luck with the project.

Do a search on the forum and you will see a whole load of questions raised on the same subject.

You will see, Andy Gayle (our resident MB guru) is dead against them - I for one respect what he says.

Mario,
There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the use of lpg in ANY vehicle - it is the design/ component quality which may be the limiting factor with some makes of vehicle ( the lpga website makes this clear for instance in the case of some Ford engine systems ).
Your primary consideration must be to consult with an approved lpga installer who can give you the latest advice on systems and applications appropriate to your vehicle.ie. separate opinion/hearsay from fact.
I've used autogas in a pre-cat 190E for over three years now with no ill effects whatsoever which leads me to conclude that whatever MB might say ( and about which models ,precisely?) running faults with lpg might more realistically be a reflection of poor quality installations/backup.

I had my 1995 Audi A6 estate converted to LPG 4 years ago and drove it for 2 years. My wife now has the A6. It has reached 190k without any problems. No noticable change in performance, but you only get about 75 to 80% of the petrol mpg.
If you are a high mileage driver, lpg at 30 ppl can't be beaten. I drive about 40k each year. The cost of conversion, for a closed loop system (on a car with a cat) was about £1400. I broke even after 25k.
On the A6, I had the lpg tank (70l, the largest that would fit) installed in the spare wheel space, under the floor (and got a space saver). I've travelled all over the UK and never had any problems getting lpg. The only downside is that you can't travel to Europe through the Channel Tunnel.

I now have an E220 CDI estate.
