hello all,

Not an expert on petrol engines - diesels are more my forte, so here goes any feed back would be much appreciated:-

car - 1990 2ltr 190e 125000 mls on clock.

Generally runs very smoothly but at idle is very lumpy, idles at about 850-900 rpm and the exhaust fumes smell very rich ( on a warm and hot engine ) could this be the mixture ( fuel inj engine ) and if so, how is it adjusted??

Also an old chestnut - what are you 190E 2.0 ltr auto owners getting to the gallon - I am averaging about 25 on mixed town / country/motorway driving with a light right foot, seems a bit low.......??

all comments gratefully digested

Great site and thanks in anticipation.........
cheers Trev.

I have similair idle at the moment, I'm putting it down the the fuel-air mix being upset by recent work ie new fuel filter/engine temp sensor etc. The smell is something I've had since I bought the car. The mixture is adjusted via a hole the airbox above the EHA (air intake chamber) its not something you can do properly without reference to an exhaust gas analyser.

Mike.

second 190E ive had that smells like its running rich also with the lumpy tickover. Passed MOT last month and I thought it would fail on fumes but passed with flying colours...

Sounds quite common then. I am in for MOT today so keeping fingers crossed too. Had air inlet chamber to bits last night and found it very oily - cleaned it all out but didnt make an awful lot of difference.

Any feed back on mpg for the 2.0 auto ??? or is mine normal.

Update

Thanks for all the information .

Delighted to say that one set of plugs, new air filter and the mixture tweaked down slightly = 1 smooth engine and an MOT pass too..

cheers! :D
