Hi,

I have a M-class ML270, 2002 model, does anyone know how I find out what tracker it has and how much it cost to activate the tracker. Do they all have standard Mercedes trackers?

Thanks.

Your ML would not have tracker fitted as standard, trackers are only fitted as an aftermarket option, if you know you have a tracker fitted either talk to the previous owner for details of the company who fitted it (refer to your log book) or contact the original supplying dealer who may have arranged fitment prior to customer delivery.

Finally, you could contact the various main 'tracker' companies who will check if your registration number is on their database........of course, you will need to supply proof of ownership, etc, before they will release any details.

Regarding cost?.........as far as i remember, you have an option af a yearly subscription or a 'one-off' payment that covers you for as long as you own the car, plus there will be a re-activation fee.

My car was an ex-demonstrator fitted with Tracker.

I had the paperwork given to me by the Mercedes dealer when I bought the car, I just called up Tracker and got the change of name and address done and chose to pay a one off fee covering me for the duration of time I owned the Vehicle. They are able to confirm what Tracker is fitted against their records.

Have you not got any paperwork or certificate when you bought the car? If not how do you know you even have a Tracker?

If it doesn't have a tracking device it will probably have the standard fit alarm and vehicle immobiliser.

Also note that 'Tracker' is a company that make tracking devices. There are a selection of other stolen vehicle tracking devices out there from many other companies.

Hi,

I have been told by the previous owners that it has a tracker, but they don't have any paper work or details.

Thanks for letting me know about how you obtain the details.

If the previous owner has no paperwork to back up the claim I would be doubtful!

You don't discard important paperwork like that.

All you can do is call up Tracker, tell them you have purchased a vehicle you understand to have a Tracker device and ask them to update the details.

Without an existing membership number though they might not be very forthcoming in giving out the details over the phone.

All you can do is try

good luck

Even till a little while a go, I didn't even know my ML had a tracker.

I phoned tracker and gave them my chassis number and they told me it does have one.

But when I phoned my insurance company they only wanted to give me £20 off so I said sod that.

Some Insurance will not insure without tracker on the ML

Do you know where I can get hold of the Tracker telephone number so that I can give them a call. I have tried a few insurance companies online and they need the Tracker type.

Thanks.

I hope it wasn't quite that easy..........otherwise, if i wanted to nick a particular Merc, all i have to do is take a note of the vin which is visible from outside, just below the windscreen and phone 'tracker' to find out if it has one fitted. ;)

Unfortunatley it is that easy, as my ML turned out to have a Horison tracker.
Completey useless as the insurance company onlt wanted to give me a £20 discount.

Other companies would not insure without the tracker.

Tacker costs are too much.

Hi
My ML has a tracker I have the entire document to prove it & as you say insurance is £10.00 discount so I phoned them to find out just how it all worked small print and all that stuff just got attitude from them because I had questioned them instead of just tipping up
Example, Motor gets stolen and turns up at Lands End 300 miles + away ok they have found it. Its was a bit of a gray area who gets it back to my house also I found out that the one time life payment only lasted for three years then I needed to renew basically I didn’t trust them so I didn’t bother, but it sounded good in the car advert “Car fitted with tracker”

Are you sure about that?..........it's a contradiction-in-terms to offer 'life cover' for a one off fee that only lasts three years...

life cover = for as long as you own the car

I have a tracker on one of my cars and won't be renewing the contract. They are expensive, don't seem to make much (if any) difference to my premium and the customer service is crap. (Think British Gas). And I also question if they work. A friend of mine carried out an experiment a while ago to see if Tracker worked. He had his car 'moved' on a low loader and waited for the call. It never came. Another friend had to recover his car at his own cost from France where it was found, as it was technically not stolen anymore. But I wouldn't want my car back if some pre-pubescent scrote had been razzing it anyway. That's what I pay insurance for. This only applies to 'Tracker'. Maybe the other tracking companies are better. I'd go for the one used by Group4 if I were you.

How would that work then?, i thought the car had to be first reported stolen for the tracker to be activated?

Some have sensors which detect movement of the vehicle without ignition on

Mine has a tracker monitor. I didn't know it was in there until a letter came through the door from tracker. There is a tear off slip on the paperwork so I guess the dealer simply told tracker who I was. Most ex demo cars seem to have them - probably a stipulation of the dealers insurance given how easy a demo would be to pinch.

Insurance wise it doesn't seem to make any difference but I figured that if I didn't activate it the car would probably be nicked (Sods law) so I paid up.

I did it on an annual basis for 3 years with the final year paid early to convert it to lifetime cover. I understand they no longer offer this arrangement though. Lifetime cover as was sold to me as " for as long as I own the car". My Dad has taken out a similar arrangement as neither of us intend changing for at least 5 years.

Hi John its a while back but there was two options one for twelve months the other was what sounded like life, but only worked out at three years.
The more I inquired the more they got ****ed of with me
I'll see what I can dig up
