I've recently purchased a 1988 560 SEC to use as a donor for its engine.
The engine will be going in my 1985 500 SEL, which currently has the older 117.963 engine.

I'll be using the inlet/injection system off my original engine to remove the need for changing the KE jet computer from the SEC.

I was reading into the EZL system, and I know my old style distributor will fit the 5.6 engine, but I like the sound of the benefits of the newer EZL, since I run LPG, and spark quality is important.
A couple of things really, The EZL needs a couple of sensors adding to my old intake system to make it work. Coolant temp sensor, and throttle position switch.
I already have both of these, but for running the old type idle stabilisation computer, which i'm going to keep.
I'm away from where my car is at the moment, so can't check first hand, but Is there a position on the manifold to accept the second temperature sensor?

Also, i'm going to need to install a throttle switch to sense idle for the idle computer, and WOT for the EZL. Here's the tricky one... I could probably use the combination switch from the original 5.6 throttle body, but the idle computer needs a 12v input for idle, and the EZL uses a grounded input for WOT. Would it matter if the EZL saw 12v at its input, and the idle computer was grounded at its input? If not I could tie the inputs together and feed either side of the switch to ground and 12v respectively.

I've got a feeling that i'm just going to have to bite the bullet and use my old style distributor.

Well here are the pros and cons
pros 0
cons lots
The distributor system was stronger and less likely to go wrong. However the EZL system, when it works ok, is very good. However the EZl system encompases many types of idle speed problems. These two systems are not compatable (as you already realise) so why go to all that trouble for a system that, may, keep letting you down.:???:

I go along with Eric on this. If you do decide to change it, as long as the ECU's get the correct polaritiy it does not matter how they are switched. As time went on it was found to be easier to switch, by just grounding as this only uses 1 lead where as to switch the + needs 2.

Hmm,
I may not bother then.... Agreed, it is a lot more work to fit it in, and I have read that the EZL's can be prone to failure. I might just give my existing distributor a good overhaul while its out.
With the old distributor, will I have any noticable power loss from the engine?

Do check the bearings for side movemet at the top, they can be replaced.

Ben, do as the guys sugested above and dump that old 560SEC EZL unit or donate it to some needy sod...ie ME:D :D
Rgds
Mike

PS Do these EZL units give up totally resulting in a non runner or is it possible for them to be faulty and send incorrect info to a poorly running engine?

Sorry Ben for butting in on your post.

Its quite simple and yet so complex, however the engines these units were fitted to very good. But there are many other factors concerning EZL. I could write a book about this. I dont have the time to do it:sad:

Mike,
I'll bare you in mind with regards to the EZL. I pick the car up tonight or Thursday, and after the weekend or so, it shouldn't matter if its a none runner.

I'm a member of Mercedesshop forum too, and they all seem to praise the EZL really highly, which made me want to try to use it. I'm generally one for making things simple and reliable though.

I cant answer if the EZL is good or bad, why not get it running if you can,it would make it easier to decide.

Hi Malcolm, Bens post got me thinking about my old 560 again so I reposted my old thread again "560sec bits replaced to date", If you have time you might have a quick look for me.
Thanks
Mike
