Hi,
I have a W203 C320 CDI Sport first reg Feb 2006 with 48K and 2300miles to an 'A' service. I'm a very new owner to Mercs, been really impressed with build performance etc BUT.... over thlast 10 days I've had numerous occasions loss of kickdown. pressed all the way to the floor to get just gradual acceleration not the usual 'thump' in the back I'd become so addicted to! well with Christmas and all the pressures that go with it I have not been able to get the car to a garage. Today I started the car and the engine light stayed on - oh dear. No kickdown what-so-ever seems like it may be in some sort of get you home mode gear changes at 1400 rpm ish no performance - any idea what this could be? Television (thanks for the welcome to the forum) suggested it may be the MAF http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?p=298179#post298179
anyone agree or have other suggestions? It will be in the garage tomorrow but wouldn't mind knowing what it is likely to be now. Also would this be covered by warranty? Thanks for your time guys (and galls;))

I would trust television (famous last words!), the same happened to my e320 cdi (one of many challenges I've had!!!), and for this it was the MAF filter.

You could have a cam magnet leak on the rocker cover that has let oil go into the MAF and on to get burnt and fouled the O2 sensor.

Please post back before you accept any work on the car

Well called MB this morning 8am. Those nice chaps at Mercedes-Benz of Slough told me to bring my car straight down so they 'could hook it up'. 40 mins later the chap came to tell me the news. 17 records of the O2 sensor fail and a stored failure of the swirl chamber motor (Television can you translate?) Great news - all covered by warranty taking it back on Wed for the O2 sensor and the other item will be completed at the next sevice as fault appears intermit. Will get the car fully checked out before the warranty expires in Feb.

As my first experience of Mercedes service treatment I am impressed, VERY impressed. I would encourage those with a choice (I was slap bang between two dealer sites) to visit these chaps at Mercedes-Benz of Slough -Top notch!:p:p:p

Another weakness of the 642 engine is the o2 sensors,

As for the swirl chamber motor, thats got to be the fuel pump!

And also the 642 engine doesnt suffer the oil-in-the-loom, well not yet anyway!!!

Well, another visit to MB (Greenoaks) of Slough today revealed how much the swirl chamber motor may affect your performance. It appears that the swirl chamber is part of the inlet manifold that sits under or very near the turbo. There are a number of butterfly valves that can vary the inlet manifold during acceleration or peak loading.

After the O2 sensor was replaced, I drove away knowing the car had to return for further repairs(swirl chamber motor) but told that it shouldn't affect performance - it did! still no kickdown.

Those nice chaps at Slough took my car back off me gave me a loaner and are chasing the repair - I really am impressed by their customer care!
Keep you posted.
