Sorry if this is repeat posting or you already know.

I need a MAF fro my 98 C240, and have just got the Part number for it; 0 280 217 515. Bosch reference will be 112 094 00 48.

There are plenty for sale on eBay (http://tinyurl.com/5v5962), but at £23 what on earth are you getting? A Chinese part I suspect... Bosch ones come in at £140-£180. However, I have found this place offers a 3yr warranty on the MAF: http://tinyurl.com/5wjmsg, though it does not state if the part is OEM Bosch.

Anyone out there who has bought a cheap MAF care to comment on its longevity and value? Or on the argument of Stealer v Pattern, v eBay?

BTW, the symptoms I have are very similar to the ones mentioned on the MAF threads. I have very poor pickup at wide throttle openings, the car hangs on to the gears to long when kicked down, and lifting my foot of the throttle when the car is revved out, induces a change up the box. Car starts and runs fine otherwise.

You have the part numbers the wrong way around. The one that starts 112 is the Merc number. I would only buy a Merc original, or a Bosch unit. Bosch have recently added a hologram to their boxes to combat the forgeries. Make sure it has one if you buy Bosch. The Bosch parts are about half the price of Merc. I recommend a 'bootstrap' proceedure by a good indy if you change the MAF. Many will probably say it is unnecessary, but in my experience it helps.

The motor dies as soon as the MAF is unplugged.......

My C220 cdi (2002) went into limp mode when the MAF was disconnected (by accident, after changing the air filter I didn't reconnect it properly). When I reconnected it, everything was OK.

A couple of years ago I bought a cheap eBay MAF (about £25) to keep as a spare (mine had done over 100K miles by then).

I installed the cheapie and got misfires. I complained and they sent me another, it was exactly the same, misfiring on acceleration.

I sent them both back, and got my money refunded. I put the old one back in, it has been ok ever since (now 167K miles).

The moral(s) - don't buy a cheap one on eBay, and don't disconnect your MAF
