Hi, this is probably a very simple question for all you members out there but i hope someone can explain in simple terms.I would like to check my maf is working properly.I have been advised to disconnect the plug which fits into the side of the maf then run the car. Will the car run smoothly with this disconnected? Could I take the car out for a short run or would damage occur. If the car runs ok with it disconnected then what exactly does the maf do? If the car runs better does that mean my maf is faulty?
Thanks

First off what car do you have.?

The maf reads the air temp and quantity of air going past it. If the MAF has failed then the engine will run rough on tickover and the throttle will be slow to rev under load ie driving, if you unplug the MAF with the engine on tickover, if failed it will stall the engine, if it continues to run ok then the MAF is fine.

Where are you in the UK.

Hi, Disconnected the maf and the engine didn`t stall, although it did drop revs slightly at the point when disconnected and reconnected. Still finding car stalling on occassions at t junctions and on locations when you drop speed to a halt. A new development is the car freely reving, almost to the point of stalling again when you come to a halt. car is a c200 (202) petrol w plate year 2000 last of the old shape 140000 miles thanks
