Just been reading all the threads regarding cleaning MAF sensors, very interesting and thanks to Parrot for his detailed account. One thing that I would ask members opinion of is what is the recomended cleaner for the cleaning of the sensor. Mentioned are electrical contact cleaner and Isopropyl alcohol, I would have thought something like carb cleaner would do, but not sure.

What year did Mercedes start using MAF's and did the earlier cars have a MAP sensor ?

These things live in an environment of petrol and diesel fumes, the cleaning is not that critical if it is going to help at all, diesel MAFs clean better than petrol versions.

So are you saying it's not really a service item and best left alone if the car is driving okay?

I was just thinking along the lines of preventitive maintaince ;)

I was just thinking along the lines of preventitive maintaince ;)

I would leave it alone and polish the insides of the wheels or something, on some cars they never go wrong

On a petrol engine if the maf is causing a problem then buy a new one, Ive just bought a new one for a customers car a 2001 CLK 320, £139.00 inc vat from a bosch agent, original part!!! or MB £242 +vat and that was with my discount!!!

So is the general concensus it is best to replace if problems arise as against cleaning.

I can understand that if you are charging a customer for a repair then it's better to replace, but if it's a DIY repair to your own car then surely it's better to try and clean first before splashing out £139.00

If like you where you do all what you can yourself, certainly have a go cleaning it, there are 3 types in use since the 124 came out, the earlier wire ones often clean OK those that do not, have gone to far out of spec, on these the wire erodes away through the bombardment of microscopic debris passing through the filter,. the air flow rate on a diesel is far higher than on a petrol. It has the same effect on the later sensor types.
My view is if it is faulty then you have nothing to lose by cleaning, and some do clean OK, I still would not touch it for preventative maintenance
