Did you find the source of the contamination before you changed it?

It just like putting new oil over old oil.

Before you change it try cleaning it this time and find the source of contamination, misaligned air filter etc, don't you have to look under the bonnet.

The cheaper MAF's have a 12 month warranty and the Bosch/Mercedes ones have a 2 year Warranty(possibly 3) So take it back for a free replacement!! ;)

What is a MAF?

I'm seeing a lot of posts about it and wondering if it should be something I should be bothered about on my CLK230?

The MAF is a device on the end of the filter on the air intake box. This device measures the incoming air and sets up the engine ECU to give the correct fueling, the early type 90's it was a hot wire,, now they use a sensor

As Malcolm says, also:

The MAF is a key engine sensor that detects the volume of air being drawn into the engine. In older engines the pressure of the air in the inlet manifold was detected using a MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) sensor, however with the development of these new, highly accurate MAF sensors, the engine management system can take advantage of a more accurate knowledge of the load of the engine. It also uses this data to decide upon the operation of the automatic gearbox: several owners have reported gearchange problems and torque converter slip that was related to a dirty MAF and NOT a problem with the gearbox.

Thank you for the extra info John,,just adding that when the MAF is bad the output of the engine drops to the point that the gearbox does not know what to do and can lock up into a low gear and do other silly things

No problem Malcolm,

You just beat me to the answer there. Incidentally, there is a very informative description on Wikipedia entitled 'mass airflow sensor' - certainly worth a read. I'm not an authority on the subject, it just so happens we use platinum wire mass flow sensors at work to measure fluids and gases.

I am also led to believe, should the MAF be suspected as faulty or dirty it can be removed from the equation by being disconnected momentarily. Should the engine run better as a result the appropriate action may be taken. I've never cleaned one but would advise extreme caution due to its very delicate nature.

Another tell-tale symptom could be excessive fuel consumption, this will undoubtedly be confirmed or denied in due course.
