Hi all,

First post to the list, so nervous <grin>

I've had my Mercedes E240 Avantgarde since October, and I'm delighted with it. I got it from Hills in Shrewsbury who were extremely helpful and courteous.

It's fast approaching its next service (49K currently, expected around 52.5 ish). I think its going to need the (large ?) B service next.

Can someone enlighten me as to the cost of both the A and B service for this car ? When the Signature warranty runs out, I'll be taking it to Andy @mercedesservicing, who was really helpful when I was looking for a car.

BTW, its a 1998 model, with the service indicator (ASSIST ?).

Thanks in advance,

Greg Thomas

Greg

Welcome to the forum.  Have a look at the heading E240, this will either enlighten or frighten you.

Main Dealer Servicing Costs

Thanks for the welcome Dave....guess I'd better actually join the MBOA next ! Does it give you any discounnt on main dealer servicing ? If so, it may pay for itself quite easily.

That thread is a bit frightening, isn't it ? Although my car is warrantied for another 10 months, so hopefully that will cover anything major.

The salesman who sold me the car said something like £130 for the A service, and £260 for the B. I think !

I'd also hope that a garage would telephone for authorisation before doing anything in addition to the service schedule, or at least pre agree some sort of threshold.

To be honest, I was so impressed with Hills (and not too impressed by Patrick's in Solihull, but that's another story), that I'd consider going there for servicing, but its a bit of a drive from me (read 200 mile round trip)

Cheers,

Greg
PS - is it just my car, or do people's low washer fluid light alert you when the reservoir is still nearly half full ?!

Different model & age, but I use an independent MB service specialist (advertises in MBOA mag) who charges £75 and £140 respectively for my W107. It's not needed any repair work, so no views on price for that, but I think you can generally expect hourly labour charge to be around half of main dealer price.

PS. There's plenty left in reservoir when my low washer fluid light comes on too!

Well as an indicator on servicing . I have a C240 which i assume will be about the asme price as it has the same engine as your E240 . A few days ago i got mine serviced it has only done 30,000 and was getting its 3rd service since aug '98 . It was an A service and the starter needed lubricating and the total bill was £200 im sure the a service was £174 or so . I was quoted £240 for the b service . Hope this helps , im not too fussed as it keeps the car going and the book stamped up.

on the subject of washer fluid , I was well annoyed when i discovered the warning on the A class . It was a Dry pump sound ... yes!!! you guessed it , it does not have a low level indicator , so better being that cautious rather then empty on a bogging motorway...

Just had a B service done on E240 avantgarde, for which I was  wrongly quoted £180 , and billed at £320. Having spoken to the dealers they reduced the bill by £100 , with a comment that mercedes owners normally book a car in and have any additional work done without any further authorisation required from customer.
B service extras charged included:-
8 units of visco 3000
oil filter
washer concentrate
winter wash
filter
wiper rubber ( we had replaced our own 2 weeks prior to service - purchased from the same dealer)
brake fluid (this is always changed as part of a B service but charged seperately)

Incidentally we now have a leak on the power steering hose/pipe , to be rectified under warrenty after complaining. Hope we don't get a bill this time as we have had twice before for warrenty work.

The dealer is Leadleys - York.

Hope you experience better customer service than me !!

Regards

John E240

Funny that.  I bought a C200 at Leadleys in york and I think customer satisfaction is an alien concept down there.   I went from Hartlepool to York because my car was advertised on the MB signature website for £9500. When I turned up it had £12500 on the windscreen. After pointing out the difference we suddenly found that the price had dropped the previous day, and they had "forgotten to change the windscreen price". mmm...  Turned up to pick the car up and the damaged rear door trim had been fixed but it was sitting on one bald rear tyre.  Complained that I thought that was not what i was expecting of a Merc signature car - I got a second-hand replacement.  I had asked them to fix a badly fitting footwell carpet - not done, just covered with some mats. 3 weeks later I got a phone call to say they had forgotten to do the signature pre-delivery check at all and I had to go back down to York to get the car checked before I could have a warranty. An unnecessary trip. Bought the car in June. Got the warranty details in November.  You'd have to pay me to get a car serviced there.

Perhaps this is way Leadleys are on the way out, apparently they have been bought out . The new owners will open on a new site.  Info supplied by another merc dealer. Not before time it seems.

I have experienced the same with SAAB main dealer servicing and was expecting better from this marque. Hope this is better in the Manchester area, any recommendations.
