my dad took the car down south and it was okay. it would give a slight judder very occasionally going from 2nd to 3rd.
any way he was driving about in London. He came to stop at a set of traffic lights and the when he tried pulling away noting. Eventually car pulled away and with a big jolt and it kept juddering and grinding noises. he then tried sticking it into 1-2, 2-3, 3-4.... when got it up to 40 and 4th. The grinding would go away till he slows down.

Thats the description i got over the phone.

hes in leyton area and i think thats east london.

now 1stly what can be wrong? where to go get it fixed? He has no idea what to do?

its a 722604 box

please people help…

Malcolm should he go to MB dealer to diagnose the problem or can he just go to them straight.

any idea what could be the problem?
If this is a 722.6 box then go to the dealers and get a readout, there are too many known issues with the control systems on this box. The box is ok, but there are control issues.

For a start, ignore erics post as ECUs do not and cannot cause the gearbox to make girnding noises.

The link I gave you will be at least half of the MB price, ring and ask both.

Very good honest people. And not far away

Malcolm

Booked it in with them. they are on there way to recover it free of charge.

Called the local MB dealer and they wanted £1280+vat+fitting for recon box and 887+vat +fitting for the torque convertor...

also i got adviced that there is a shortage in these gearboxes and MB in germnay even dont have any instock, u can come pay for it and we will let u know when we get it in. no timescales...

i have one little question, do u need to get the torque convertor changed even if it is okay when getting a gearbox rebuilt?

Will let u knw the progress and the final bill...

oh last but not least, malcolm, " U THE MAN"... thanks for the link.

cars done 125k

I think that with this milage,I would change it, to avoid the labour cost should it go,wait for the report from the specialist, there may be some debris in it from the box.

right they are going to recon everything inc a recon torque convertor but not the gearsets. £1650 all in... does that seem okay for a recon job?

what are gearsets?

Thats a good price,I paid £1100 in 2000.

The gear sets do not give problems, its more bearings. I feel happier on having the torque re conditioned as it cant be cleaned.

Hope it all goes well.

The reason why I recomend these people is because their guarantee is first class and they do what they say.

Through no fault of theirs mine had to be re built 3 times and they did not charge or argue. In my case the alli case was crumbling causing the valve block to jam up,an unknown problem with my SAAB BW box. They got a new casing as I said at no cost to me.

Paid 1650 inc vat... car was done within 2 dayz very quick service...

the guys there swaped for a brand new gearbox that they had there for a few years as my gearbox was beyond repair... they say it was wear and tear. They gave some bits back with it and cogs were badly damaged... will put some pics up as soon as i get time.

i feel the car being ever soo slighty jerky going from 2nd to 3rd... i dnt knw if im parniod or wot??? do u think the memory needs resetting... or is it a faulty box?
