Making an Exhaust Flamer Kit

I have been looking at exhaust flamer kits and they seem to be just a spark plug and a ignition coil but then theirs a circuit with them as well.

What would happen If I just connect the Coil to 12Volt with the spark plug on and not use the circuit? I didnt want to try it just incase it blew up in my face or something so thought I would as the pros first


Or do you think its safer to just buy a pre built one made by a company?
