I have a 2001 E200 K. When i started it this afternoon i got a malfunction warning me that coolant level was low. I checked the expansion bottle and it appeared to be at the normal level. I put in a little water - maybe half a pint or so and the malfunctioncleared. No sign of any leaks / overheating. I am wondering if perhaps the sensor is too sensitive?

Hi merc911

I wouldn't describe these 'level sensors' as being 'too sensitive'. They are pretty robust and infallible; they either work, or don't. I agree with tom7035.

I would continue to monitor the level though, just in case.

Hi Philharve

What i meant about the sensor being too sensitive is that it seems to activate when very liittle coolant loss occurred - not a bad thing. I have also noticed that the windscreen washer sensor activates when the bottle still has quite a lot of liquid in it - must be a "merc" thing

Yes these devices certainly work on the safe side, must be a Merc thing, cant be a bad thing

coolant level sensor

HI

mercs have a very odd habit of wiring the coolant level sensor and the washer level sensor in series on the same circuit, it is more likley that one of them is faulty and by topping up the coolant level you have brought the whole circuit into alowable parameters, same result would be possible by topping up the washer bottle. monitor the problem and bear in mind the above information
