ESP and BAS came up telling me both not working to take to mercedes ASAP
was wondering if this is connected to snow on Wednesday???
This was last time I was out in car(picked it up to save wife driving home) then washed the car.
Went ou this morning as lovely day onlt to be greted with aforementioned warnings...still went out though with roof down and did 50 miles with no problems!!!
Will take to dealer tomorrow but wondering if will keep happening in snow.

Car is 2005 SLK 200

Could need a steering column module wiring mod. This will be carried out as a warranty repair.

Since you are taking it to the dealer when they read the codes they will be able to let you know where the problem is. Brake light switch is a possibility, although that usually gives an ABS warning light as well as the BAS & ESP.

just out of curiosity Shambolic, have you tried stamping on the brakes to see what happens? i.e. are the anti-lock brakes and traction control still working? Should be relatively safe to find out (as long as you check your mirrors first :D )

My 2003 SLK 200 was serviced at MB dealer just recently and I had the BAS ESP light lighting up intermittently. It seems it was the aforementioned brake light fault.

Hello Lance, welcome to the forum, yes the brake light switch is a common problem on many cars in the range, as its only £9 and easy to fit, it must be the cheapest fault going.

Thanks for that. Well on the service report it cost 0.00 which was good, although I can't say the same for the fault I had with the headlights which weren't going very far. That turned out to be a fault with the vac pipe or something which cost another £70...The service report was all very professional, but cost in total £635!!

Actually I registered for the forum nearly 3 years ago but never posted, not sure why, I think I must have lost the forum in my bookmarks

ABS/BAS/ESP? Havent seen a MB yet with all three systems:confused: We have ABS with ASR and BAS with ESP. Surley BAS superceeded ABS? Am I wrong?

Just to add a correction here, The faulty brake light switch trigers the BAS;ESP and not the ABS which is the base system that the other two take their info from. The things is here that in the event of a ABS failure, it will knock the other two out, though they may not be shown as faulty as in this case the ABS is at fault and not the ESP;BAS.

My 210 has ABS, BAS & ESP.

Snap. They came in handy in the recent brief snow we had, as did the 'W' setting.

BAS=Brake Assist System? Yes?

BTW.

I read in the manual that when the car is on a brake testing roller (MOT) the car engine must not be running when the parking brake system is tested, as the ESP/BAS will kick in and cook the Park brake system.

I will be sure and leave a note at my local testing station warning the tester of this, when the time comes. Glad I spotted that, it could be an expensive mistake.

ESP uses all 4 wheels for info and uses the BAS to overide any pedal presure that may be inadequately applied during driving. The handbrake does not matter during the test, the fact is that all 4 wheels are not going round.

Another reason for either MB or a MB specialist to undertake the MOT. There is another thread on MOT stations lifting the car incorrectly and straining the diff. - Post 8 here http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=21827

Yes you are wrong on this one, all cars that have BAS and ESP must have ABS in order to function.

The ABS is the base system long before we had BAS and ESP, every car has an ABS warning lamp. The BAS is assistance given electronicly to conpensate for inadaquate braking fom the driver and is applied to the indvidual wheel as required, in order to do this we have the ESP that needs to know the steering angle so that the correct compensation is applied. This uses a tuning fork element so that in the straight ahead possition the sensor in the center of the two tuning fork arms then knows that the car is in the ahead possition, when the wheel is turned, so that the sensor is in contact with the side of the tuning fork can measure the presure applied to it and work out the correction needed to bring the rear of the car into line by means of the BAS.

Well you may well be correct there malcolm. But why risk it?

The parking brake does not need the engine running and it states clearly in my manual that the engine must not be running?

BTW. IMO It's not a handbrake. For that you use your hand, hence the term, handbrake-turn. :)

It's a parking brake. It has a big P on the release.
