I for one disapprove. The tax paying populus is getting punched in the face yet again by our trotskiest government.

Why, to raise revenue (to be given to those who dont deserve it) and appease greens who dont contribute. Right now the government should be thinking of ways to cut the cost of motoring and fuel with soaring oil prices, not drive the cost of it up.

Not everyone will be able to afford this, sure the very well off will be able to and see it as a minor expense, but thats not the point. They pay so much in the way of VAT on expensive purchases, CGT and/or income tax that they should not have to put in anymore, out of principle.

Then there is the big brother aspect of it all. Just think, if you drive into manchester, then out, the state will know how long you;ve been, and together with CCTV have an accurate picture of how you spent your time.

George Orwell predicted this for 1984, okay he is 24 years out, but not a bad guess.

We should be petitioning the government against such a thing, and look to petition it so it doesnt bring CC to other cities. This is not a NIMBY moment. Lets do something, then at least we tried.

Agreed, this country is cr@p. I had the IR wanting to come and inspect my books, my reply was "why does margaret beckett need some more plant pots" and then I put the phone down.

I see that the Spanish, the French, the Belgiums are in the process of blockading roads, refineries, ports etc. What do the British do - try to organise a PETITION.!!

Enough said.

A petition seems about right for over here.

I'd love a Manchester riot. The government, not this one, will push us too far, and there will be a backlash.

The British could always 'up the anti'. and get a few Mums and Kids to wave home-painted banners outside the Town Halls.

Marvellous.!!

Lets pull up a sand-bag and swing the lampshade.

There is hope - the proposal (for that's all it is) requires 7 out of 10 local authorities to support it. Currently, 3 local authorities have stated that they will NOT support a CC.

The kids can go to bed - they won't be needed for the time-being.

All our taxes used to be for getting the bins emptied, building and fixing road infrastructure, keeping us fit and fixing our ailments and educating our kids.

As our current leaders now require us to pay for these things as well, perhaps there is a case for indicting our leaders for Fraud and Misappropriation.

We could then sell their assets to realise the damages.

I think it is inevitable that all major cities will have to introduce some sort of vehicle control, If you can imagine that the vehicle population will increase steadily as time progresses then surely deadlock must come at some time or other..so in effect owning or driving a vehicle in a highly populated area will be a nightmare..and councils and government know this and they can now use this as a method of screwing us for whatever pennies we have left and we cant complain cos they are right.. so basically we are totally screwed ..there is never enought opposition to stop these things..because it isnt gonna affect enough people...

There has to come a point in the conciousness of the electorate when the fact that this government is raising "Green" taxes but cutting investment in public transport actually hits home.

Roll on the next General Election

We used to live in Orange County (Southern California).
Lots of cars swanning about.
When the freeway needed maintenance a length was shut overnight, a whole crew moved in and stripped, resurfaced and finished in time for the morning rush hour.
The arguments used here in the UK would be considered risible in the colonies!

The congestion charge was announced as a national scheme in place of existing taxes. Had it come from someone other than this gov it may have had credebility but its new labour so it's automatcally a lie. And so it proved. They did a big PR thing showing how the staff at this firm in Newcastle wouldn't be adversely affected. Another lie.
Now they've admitted what we already knew. It was technically difficult to implement and as the Gov would be doing it, would cost billions and if cost neutral wouldn't provide the extra billions needed to fund the public sector pensions overspend. (MPs and public sector staff granting themselves pensions we can only dream of and paid out of a blank cheque they've written themselves from our bank accounts).

So they say they are 'trialling' it. This way they can introduce it through the back door (one if this govs favourite routes) and because it's local, do their other favourite thing, and hit small groups of individuals rather than large groups who could hit possibly back. Also, it means it's impossible to make it cost neutral.

The council veto is also a lie allegedly. If they do vote against, the GMC will simply overrule them. Its rather like the gatso lie. A granny falls over a flagstone so they class it as an accident and put up a camera. There are always ways for these cheats to fiddle the system.

The same can be said for Spain. No kilometres and kilometres of cones for weeks/months on end - with no-one working on it.

It just wouldn't be tolerated.

What annoys me about this congestion charge is that no one thinks at 08:30 that it would be fun to drive into Manchester. They are driving in at that time because they have to for work, school or college not just for the fun of it. This will affect working people and business, possibly making businesses go elsewhere.

Just stay out of Manchester, its their loss.

The easiest way to show your disaproval is just never go there. I, for one, have removed it from my sat nav already.

Half the problem is that we see congestion only in terms of number of cars on the road. When you factor in the fact that traffic is not moving because of selfish parkers, endless road works with no sense of urgency to them and purposely devised traffic plans intent on creating congestion in order to give motorists a hard time, then you are not talking about sheer volume.

Don't forget bus lanes in that list:mad:

I was driving into Mrc one morning at around 7am (aimed to get to my desk by 7:30 to avoid the traffic) and found a muppet starting to cone up one of the main roads into the city from the M62.
At 7AM on a weekday! They couldn't wait until 9:30 or do it at a weekend. No they had to cause the maximum disruption.
