Hi everyone :) After a few years using Mann oil filters, I noticed a thing. The MB genuine one has a different shape. Does someone know for sure that this difference doesn't cause problems? Will the retain valve inside the oil filter cap do its job anyway with Mann filter? Or will this different design cause troubles? Honestly I'm concerned about this thing.

Thank you :)

Ok. I've used Mann which are an OEM filter maker for mercedes and I've also used Bosch . Both were flat top and bottom. I'm onto my 6th Mercedes and never bought anything from a dealer . Pictured is a filter ready to drop into my e350 by Borg and beck . Also flat top n bottom . Not sure why the mb filter has raised parts . ? The overall length should be the same .....

Good point. I used to buy only genuine too, then I read in this forum that it was a waste of money. Now this doubt. I really don't know. Some brands are flat, some (Valeo, Febi, etc.) are identical to the MB one. I only hope the oil filter cap does what it's meant to do. Retain oil for engine start

They are different for a reason and I sure MB who have been making engines for a while now would know and design an appropriate filter.
For the sake of a few pounds on a car critical component - gen all the way for me.

I agree with you but honestly if the difference is real, this thing is shocking. I relied on Mann name, and I probably damaged my engine...

Mann and Bosch along with other makers sell 1000's of filters . Knee jerking about genuine mercedes filters bearing in mind mercedes don't make anything apart from maybe engines and gearboxes, is just silly.

Of course we hear it all the time on TV and the radio about other makes of oil filters ruining car engines .

One thing you should always consider is that MB design the filters and dictate the specification of materials used in their manufacture.
Can you guarantee this in third party offerings I only buy genuine MB parts and the same for my BMW for this reason

Hobson's choice .

I'd imagine the 3rd party you speak of make the mb filters anyways , you can often see their name clearly printed on the side . In a mb pretty box.

Yes the specs and standards for a mb product maybe of a higher standard . But 3rd party parts are more than adequate and in terms of quality won't be too far off the mark , if at all.

For example the om651 air filter . Genuine dealer parts . The mb star with part numbers . Made and produced for mb by Mahle.

Same as the fuel filter I recently bought Mann 820/14 clearly printed on the side next to the mb star . £126 from mb . £46 direct from Mann.

Wouldn't have thought so.
If the engine was shedding debris that the filter failed to catch then yes.
Is your engine shedding debris?
Would this specified Mann filter fail to catch it, is it allowing oil to bypass?

I restate - why take the chance the cost of a genuine oil filter is minuscule compared to the other costs of keeping a car on the road. I do very low annual miles so my genuine MB filter stays in the engine for 2 years, same with the BMW. MB used to recommend biannual oil changes now they have switched to annual presumably to appease the dealers, interestingly enough BMW recommend biannual oil changes for low miles users

biannual oil changes
I'll stick to mileage.
The Viano (651) can cover 25k between (due to the 9 litre sump), but because it's the 651 I'll change at 15k.
That's approx 13 / 14 months.

The 211 (646) will get changed at 15k also. That'll be approx bi annual.

But the 646 is more robust than the 651with its chocolate bits.

I don't use cheap filters, but I'm happy to buy a good brand off eBay.
I haven't witnessed a difference in designs, but will be looking for it now.

And how many posts do we see people asking who makes this and that for mb , so they can source parts directly . ?

I appreciate your comments whole heartedly and congrats on keeping things pure mb .

I service my cars every 6k . Never had any issues whatsoever. I do like buying mercedes parts also ,just not with the star on that's double the price .

thank you to everyone. I didn't want to raise a big discussion. Only to know in detail if the plastic black part in the genuine filter had a specific role or it's only pure design choice :) It would be absurd that mann filters could damage an engine. My doubt is about the oil retaining valve

Stressing over nothing! Slightly different designs for the same application seem pretty common. Some of the filters have plastic ends, others are cut straight. The genuine oil filter from the dealer the 190e is smaller than oem hengst/Mann etc.

I buy a bunch of oem filters on eBay for a few quid each and stock up oil from Costco or wherever when it’s on offer. It’s so little expense in the scheme of running the car and so little effort with the tool I don’t try to drag the changes out.
