MANUALS TO BE EXTINCT
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/205193/end_of_the_road_for_manual_shifters.html

Interesting article in AutoExpress quotes Toyota as hinting at the demise of manual gearboxes -something most Merc owners will not be upset about.

The article says: -
'Toyota has revealed that the traditional 'boxes are proving difficult to match to the complex power cycles of new petrol/electric hybrid engines, and so are likely to be unsuitable for its hi-tech traction control systems, too. Cars such as the new Auris, which currently come in manual form, will eventually only be available as autos.

The firm's latest concepts, including the LF-A, IS-F and FT-HS hybrid, all offer automatic or sequential manuals, which industry insiders believe signals the end of stick-shift cars.

Gradual withdrawal of conventional manuals is being driven by another less obvious force, with sales across the world dropping as congested roads convince drivers to steer away from traditional transmissions. Among the new technologies on offer are torque converting 'boxes, robotised manuals that use hydraulic motors to switch ratios, and CVT and i-CVT units that employ special chain and belt driven set-ups.

However, even some of these systems could be under threat, as the speeds offered by fully electric engines far exceed those offered by petrol and diesel power-plants.

Meanwhile, BMW looks set to introduce an eight-speed automatic gearbox to its 7-Series range for 2009. The set-up - similar to the seven-speed offering on the firm's M5 - will put BMW on a par with Lexus' multi-cogged LS460.'

You could be doing that now if we had a few Unimog owners on the forum

i love auto boxes. you just need to adjust your driving style. i don't think fans of manual boxes give it enough time.

I don't even care whether it is Manual or Auto really.

I was driving a manual Transit minibus the other day and found it quite good fun but I would hate to have to drive an (old style) British made Automatic Mini for example.

If it was a choice for everyday use Merc Autos work really well so that's what I drive just now.

The area where I move in, at the very bottom end of the used car market I find many people shy away from Autos because of Folklore!

"An automatic is a lazy mans car"

Is an often heard quote!

Maybe they need a manual box to keep them fit.:)

Apart from some of the rare beast that I have owned, I have only had auto's since the early 60's, Is there any point in pushing your left leg up and down all day.

I generally drive in auto (C mode), sometimes when around town I'll use the paddle change (manual) on the steering wheel, mainly because it's there!

I keep saying I wish my 500 SL had a manual box

it would really be the bees knees if it it did have. I'm glad the 300TE is auto though, it sends the kids to sleep in record time when they are in it.

For normal cars, yes. For sports cars, never.

They say, never say never, don't they. Formula 1 are all paddle shift now aren't they and Le Mans was won by a diesel with semi automatic DSG gearbox. Is nothing sacred?

I can remember when enthusiasts said sports cars would never have electric windows, etc etc etc. Now Television and many others wants every extra in the book.:D

Well for me part of the fun is learning to correctly time gearchanges and coordinating the movement of 2 feet and 2 hands to produce a beautiful noise and a sequence of metallic dots in the rear view mirror :)

Flappy paddle gearboxes just don't do it for me.

Sounds like a good case for getting rid of synchro-mesh eh?

I must admit I miss having a manual. It's something to do with your left hand instead of having it on the armrest. I brought Auto because someone told me the manual gearboxes in Mercs were bad.

I had a go in my friends new Astra the other day, and it just made me miss having to change gear. Odd isn't it? Surely Auto driving is easier?

I think geared driving is more 'real' driving as I can put it.

I really hope the future isn't full of cars that drive themselves on saterlite channels or something or the other... Where's the fun in that?

My old 1928 RR had a crash box, where you must double de clutch, the nice thing with that car was that it would pull away in top gear if you wanted.

I have bought cars in the past where the clutch has been shot and driven them home by listening for the correct engine speed. but these days on the roads,is it any fun pushing your left leg up and down all day.

I like to call it exercise, I noticed my left knee has expanded half an inch since I've owned the Merc... Alas... :(
