hello all, i have recently picked up (rescued) a 1989 190e 2Lt, it needed a lot of work, all electrical work is now complete, however when i am driving and open sunroof or window the cab fills up with what i think are exhaust fumes, even with vents closed. I presume its exhaust related, or fuel breather pipe, any ideas? car is parked up till i get this sorted. Cheers..

Hi mate I might be wrong ,but I cant see exhaust fumes entering via the sunroof, unless it was a leak on the minifold,I would tend to look for a hose, split or off, a part of the the crankcase breather system,ie from the rocker cover to the auxiliary air valve and to the air filter unit.
If it was exhaust related you would hear it blowing, its nothing simple like a aftermarket back box ?hope you get it sorted.I have actually drove through Telford with the back box and middle box removed ,after it snapped, apart from the noise,I didnt get fumes in the car.

More likely to be petrol fumes? Is it worse when the tank is full?

fuel amount makes no difference, and strangely enough it doesnt come in thru the middle fresh air vent, just the slightest opening of window or s/roof and fumes? enter. i will check those hose connections though, cheers

The reason it only comes in with the roof or windows open is that you are creating negative air pressure in the car so the fumes are sucked in - the vents don't. As to the cause of the smell, I can't help you. The problem in my car was a leaky fuel filler neck, which is why it only ever did it when the tank was full.
