Hello my name is John and I have just joined the forum.
I have just bought am E220d SE and the stop/start will not activate when I come to a stop. The switch on the centre console is lighting. The engine starts without battery issues.I have driven the car for approximately 2 hours without any activation of the stop/start function. Q. Is there an auxiliary battery and if so where would I find it within the car?
Thank you.

Welcome!

Most on here would say lucky you start/stop not working including me due to adding wear to the engine. For S/S to work the main battery and auxiliary battery need to be in good condition and other parameters met like outside and engine temperatures and battery loading from auxiliaries.

I certainly wouldn’t worry about it but would check the voltage on your main battery which should be 12.6V fully charged engine off

Thank you Malcolm and Andy. I am not a fan of the s/s but, as I have just got the car from the dealership last week and I thought that this function SHOULD be operational prior to selling the car. I will bring this to the deaters attention. I just want it to work, but like yourselves I will not be using that function. Thank you both for your response.

Yes you are right, if the function is part of the cars spec then it should most certainly be operational at least :)

There is a lot of negative sentiment about stop/start without any evidence of it causing issues.

In terms of when it is activated, there are a significant number of items that need to be satisfied before it will be enabled.
They include battery charge, achieving a minimum speed, electrical load, seatbelts in use, temperature of engine, external temperature, etc., etc.
The icarsoft MB V2.0 lists them all and their status.
I have found that having air con switched on means that S/S won't be enabled. Even turning the wheel sharply (e.g. parking) will mean that S/S is disabled.

Try switching the air con off just before you stop at traffic lights and see if it enables.

Thank you all. All items that I considered that would be a draw off on the battery were switched off with the exception of the seat belts.\

I’m another one like @steveq (must be something about the name) who has no issue using Stop/Start and mine does work when the AirCon is on.

However, cold weather and limited use meant that mine hasn’t worked for a couple of months even though the car starts fine, I did put my CTEK charger on overnight recently and, guess what, on my next outing, the Stop/Start indicator turned green for the first time in ages about five miles into my journey.

I shouldn’t worry about it unduly but, if you have a battery conditioner, stick it on for a while and it will sort out both batteries, if needed.

PS Welcome!

Is this a w213 model? There is no 2nd or auxiliary battery on this. These is a capacitor type just under the driver seat near the door panel. I had issues with mine. You could try replacing that to see if it works.
