Mercedes along with Toyota, General Motors and Fiat have been accused of not giving information on repairs to independants so as to allow for the safe and cost efficient repairs.

Any details Malcom?
Who is doing the accusing?
I would have thought ALL car manufacturers could be accused of that - not just those named.

This is the Bock Exemption Review where manufactures must give information and parts to independents.

And they are legally bound to give this info and help, its all part of the Block exemption laws where we have the right to know who makes what and for whom

That is definately not the case with Mercedes.

How can it be, when even I (non trade) can pay for the Mercedes EPC subscription and see all parts info that I could possibly want.

The trade can use the Mercedes on line engineering info and again even I can buy the technical manuals for my car on CD, directly from Mercedes.

The independents can also buy the STAR diagnostic equipement and full back up.

All original parts are also very available, and there is a delivery service to small trade outlets.

So, in conclusion, in the case of Mercedes NO CASE TO ANSWER. They are fully playing their part. And Malcolm, you also know that.

yes I understand.

Did you go to MechanEx at Sandown earlier this month ??

Was there much talk there about this issue ??

Any innovative product that "grabbed you" ?

Yes BER had a stand the main issue it would seem is

1. Detailed info on recalls;
2. Detailed info on best practice and quickest-route-to-fix;
3. Only providing access to work procedures and parts catalogues on a "whole" basis rather than on an "as needed" basis;
4. Not providing reset codes for ECUs, or unlock codes for electronic systems relating to safety and performance.

Lots of good things at the show,too many to list

They must be a bit behind the times then - this story first surfaced in March 2005.
