New Member but thought this experience was worth sharing.

Took car to local dealer for report on rusty tailgate. Assesor thought claim would be no prob but cannot claim until I have been registered keeper for 6 months minimum. Car has full Mb service history to date but I have no intention of continuing this, hence a 6 month delay will result in one service being carried out by indi.
Is this just local dealers playing funny bugg*rs or is this gennerally accepted policy?
Interested to hear view experiences.

The rust is already there so there should be no problem now using an indie to service your car..

Really? I would certainly question that if it were me.

FWIW I've had three rust-warranty repairs and I use and indi for all my servicing. However, I'm sure MB are getting a bit tired of all these claims so it wouldn't surprise me if they're beginning to make up some new rules.

I'm not doubting you Malcolm (television), quite the opposite in fact. After all, you are a very knowledgeable and helpful chap (thank you) but has anyone else heard of this compulsory "last service done by MB"? I, for one, doubt whether it's even legal.

Hi All

When I had the rust to my wheel arches repaired a couple years ago, I had already adopted an indie and was having my car serviced by him at the time of my claim. The repairs were still undertaken at MB's expense.

I should have thought that if the car was being serviced in line with MB's procedures and parts, it ought not make a difference to who last serviced the car prior to a claim for rust. Whether a claim is successful is very much a lottery.

The actual words in the book are

For up to 30 years* We provide a warranty against bodywork corrosion.

* Maintenance services must have been carried out regularly in accordance with the manufactures instructions and by a Mercedes Benz Service Station from the fifth year after delivery of the vehicle by the Daimler Organisation. If this is not the case, any claims made to Mobilo Life are automatically invalidated.

I have had quite a lot of warranty work done on my car new bonnet, tailgate, and just about everything else painted wings etc, rust is now appearing on front wing's again, the car has full MB Dealer History from new
which I thought gave the Dealership a good chance to inspect.........but they don't, they only look at what YOU point out. Mercedes Head Office treat's you, the dealer staff and paintshop poorly. MB have cocked up in the manufacture of their product yet YOU go through a rigmarole for their mistakes every time, and then, subject to variable criteria, if accepted get a stupid courtesy car a Micra or similar in exchange for in my case a 7 Seater, it is time they behaved in an honourable manner, I personally think that Mercedes should have the chance to regularly inspect the vehicle for rust at service, but they don't when you leave the car with them so how can they reasonably insist on MB servicing.

I am not able to find that in my paper work supplied with the vehicle and as I point out this "requirement" is clearly invalidated when as in my case they Inchape, on Mercedes behalf don't inspect for or treat rust during service.

I have to say that Swindon Mercedes have been very helpful in sorting our W211's tailgate; mind you, they should have noticed that the rust had returned while they were servicing it, rather than me finding it when I got home.

That said, they have provided me with a brand new loan car - C class estate for my E class estate - which is sitting outside at the moment, and has been for the past 10 days while they decided to rreplace the tailgate rather than repairing it again.

MB fixed the rust on my car even though the last service had been done by an independent (before I owned it) and I had only owned the car for about 2 months.

Maybe I was just lucky. In fact I was so impressed with how I was treated I am going to use them to service my car in the future.

This falls down the Mobilio gap. Is it a Mobilio claim or a goodwill warranty claim - we don't really know. Mobilio 30yr warranty is technically perforation from the inside so it is a loose interpretation if it is.

Mobilio on cars up to 04 is invalidated once the car has been serviced outside the dealer network. Over. Done.
Post 04 same applies, but, it can be re-instated with a single dealer service.

Now if its not Mobilio and simply a goodwill claim, MB used to say min 6 months ownership (to stop traders buying cheap rusty mercs, repairing them at MB's expense and the flogging them at a profit - they wanted to help owners, not traders) and up to 8 years old. It is negotiable outside these parameters but depends greatly on how agressive/pro-active/devious the dealer is.

You're right about the dealer inspections, they don't. I used to request my 240 was inspected specifically at each service and they'd commonly report they'd raised a claim for one panel or another when I went to collect. But, this isn't the reason. The real reason for the dealer service stiplulation for Mobilio is to tie you to the network, nothing to do with inspection regimes.
