Your Mercedes
230E/1981
Hi, will introduce myself later in the 'hello' section. For now, I have recently bought a 1981 RHD 230E saloon auto with a/c here in Cyprus. The car is ex UK, registered 01/08/1981. It is showing 113K MILES, but has had a replacement engine at some time from a 1984 LHD 230E. This engine has a duplex timing chain. The car did not have a/c ex. factory.

Work done so far to get the car reliably roadworthy;
a) Replaced the perished F&R brake hoses and flushed the brake fluid.
b) Replaced all engine coolant hoses, thermostat, flushed and refilled coolant.
c) Replaced several perished fuel hoses near the fuel tank/pump car.
d) Replaced leaking r/cover gasket and adjusted tappets.
e) 4 wheel alignment check and wheel balance.
f) Regassed a/c - it works![/B]

Oil pressure reads '3' and temp reads about '85' (35C ambient temp).

Hope you can advise the following;

1. Are the oil pressure and temp about right?
2. There is a 'zzzz' from the gear select, which if you apply side pressure disappears. Is there a fix for this?
3. Can the later instruments be fitted? Mine does not have a rev counter or economy gauge.
4. Can cruise control be retro fitted, either original or aftermarket?
5. There is hardly any history with the car (not unusual for Cyprus!). How can I establish the UK supplying dealer and original UK registration? Might there be a UK service record for this car?

The car now drives well and importantly, does not have the tin worm! Look forward to hearing from you.:)

Oil pressure and temp are fine. The oil pressure will drop to 1.5ish when hot idle.

Sounds like the selector mechanism may need looking at. Best to get someone to have a look from underneath.

You can fit later instruments if you can find any. Pretty hard to find used and not cheap. The rev counter will need wiring to coil.
Economy just needs vac from manifold.

Cruise can be fitted but you need all the wiring, throttle control etc. I have seen them sold as kits on ebay.
There is a chap called leigh holbrook who specialises in w123 parts...

I doubt you will find history. Mb changed systems many times since then. Lucky to get history for anything before 2008 these days!
