I know this was up for discussion a while back, but had my first A service carried out today, whilst at reception, lady asked if I,d considered taking out a service contract. My cars 14 months old, with under 10,000 miles, she is sending me a qoute of the monthly cost in the post. Reading the leaflet, it all appears to be a good idea, particualy the service plus which covers some wear and tear items, I am thinking pads and discs next service, but I am thinking 20 months of warrenty still exists, am I throwing money away. Has anyone taken this contract out, or investigated them, or have an opinion, be pleased to know.

Interesting to hear that it's being promoted - it had seemed almost a secret.

I got a brochure about it a while ago and it would seem there are 2 schemes: one for 0-3 yr old car and one for 3-6 yrs old. This seems logical as a 0-3 year car should only need servicing and consumeables, whereas the 3-6 year scheme additionally seems (according to people who have it) to be almost as good as an extended warranty.

I guess you need to see what the quote is. I'm not sure of the serice schedule on an E55 but typically with MB, if your use of the car stays as it is now, then your next service is a B at £450, plus brake fluid change, so you're going to be looking at £500+. Unless you're hard on the brakes you'll probably not need those doing. You'll probably need another A service before the car is 3. Your MOT would also be covered

So an A & and B at perhaps £750 plus the MOT (£50?) may well be the sum total of your expense until the car is 3. I would guess that in your case ServicePlus's value to you probably hinges on whether you do in fact need a set of pads and disks before the car is 3.

Of course, there’s a ‘peace of mind’ benefit, and other users report that it’s wonderful to take the car and not have to think about the bill.

My car is coming up to 3 years old and I’ll certainly be getting a quote for it.

Whilst on the phone to MB this week, they affered my wife a service plus contract at a cost of £55 per month until they found out we do less than 10.000 miles a year, they stated we were not eligeble for the scheme!!

I will be on the phone Monday as we are taking out another 2 years extended warranty on the car which we were offered at time of purchase (car 3 years old when purchased), I am thinking will this be available as we only travel about 4.000 miles a year

Will keep you posted

"Not eligible" seems strange - I could imagine them saying you have to buy the 10K/yr cover as a minimum. Or just say you do 10K/yr - it surely doesn't matter that your mileage is lower.

There is a body of opinion on these forums that ServicePlus gives just the same cover as an extended warranty and of course also includes servicing and repairs for a similar price to the warranty only.

Just to go back to this service plus issure, received from local MB dealership the costs for my car to which has just had its first service which came to £260.00, the service only package, £24.00. plus Vat a month, and £54.00 plus Vat a month for, service, and "wear and tear" items and MOT cost, all based for the next 2 years. The first MOT will fall into this second year.
As I understand it, "wear and tear" items is not including everything, but does include for Discs and pads. About £350 a year for service only, or £760 a year for service/W&T/mot. what do you all make of those costs, I am thinking both packages look expensive, But taking onboard Rorys previous comments, the discs and pads, I am not overly hard on the brakes myself, but the first 5K miles of the car was as a MB demo, so I am thinking discs and pads, so does anyone know the cost of replacing discs and pads on a 55.
Somehow I dont think I am going to enjoy the answer!

My A service came to £420 as it had the glow plugs changed too, so in my case that particular time the service contract may have been worth it. I'm in 2 minds at the moment, as my car is 3 yrs old in September.

The discs and pads all round haven't long been done and I probably only do 11 or 12k a year, and mostly motorway now but with a fair bit of stop start.

Is it normal to pay for glowplugs in warranty, especially with such a low mileage?

Here are links to threads that answer just about everything to do with Service PLus.

BTW after much investigation I am convinced it is as good as it seems. As good as it says on the tin. As good virtually as an extended Manufacturers warranty plus a service contract. You can join while under guarantee (costs less to reflect the guarantee period), or wait till near end of 3 year warranty. Can leave with 3 months notice or pass to a new buyer who can continue paying.

Wrong, just had an 'a' service this week with service plus and screen wash was included. Hate to think what it would have cost otherwise!!!!

Sorry, I should qualify... It is included in a service but not as a separate purchase (it's about £2.50 a bottle :) )

I've got to be honest, I never gave it a thought. I assumed they would be wear and tear not covered by the warranty. :-?

If you check the bill, it is sort of included in the sense that they supply and fill up, but on my service it shows it as a separate item 500ml at £2-74p plus vat. But it makes about 5 litres or more and is good value, I think.
