I thought members might find this 'amusing'. I had a SL500, the roof switch started flashing and gonging. I took it to my local MB main dealer. Two days later they phoned me ' We've had it in the workshop , you need a new roof ECU, cost £2300 plus fitting. ' I could not afford this, I bought a second hand one from a breaker ( £370 ) . I took this to MB and they fitted it. It made no difference. I suggested it might not be the ECU. They took the car into the work shop. I watched whilst they loosened 2 bolts, moved a windsceen mounting sideways and the fault was fixed. They charged me £300 for this. Being a 'cautious' type when I first left the car I placed a nut on top of a front wheel under the wheelarch. When I returned 2 days later after their 'workshop examination/testing' the nut was still there. I spoke with their ' customer relations person' she told me ' they must have seen the nut there and put it back for me'... Why would they do this? I later sold the original ECU on Ebay - fitted it on my drive to the buyer's car and it worked ok. I will not name the dealership but I live in Manchester.

had a similar do with a MB service, engine was not pulling at low revs, or accelerating well, so took it in. Fitted a new oxygen sensor or something, about £200 anyway, and not much better, or about the same. While away popped into a garage and mentioned the problem, took one listen to it and said it was a plug not working well. In fact after looking at it, found out it was a plug lead, cost, £12. Worked fine ever since.
Also at same MB service place, was told after a service that the front disks needed replacing and would i like to book the car in. Being a bit busy and working away from home a lot decided not to at that time. Car has been through 3 MoTs since with same disks, and no problems.

just my experience.

Cheeky Charges

Took my C-class along to the main dealer for a 'sticking seatbelt' warranty repair a couple of years ago and while there they asked if there was anything else. Oh yes, I said remembering that the boot light seemed intermittent as it didn't always light up.

No problem they said we'll check that too.

I waited while they did it and when ready they said, That's all done sir - no charge for the new seatbelt all under warranty. We've put a new bulb in the boot and it works fine so I just have one charge for the new bulb in the boot.

Fine I thought reaching for my pocket to get a couple of quid out.

How wrong I was!!! They printed out a great long itemised invoice - Approx £1.69 for the bulb plus £20 labour to fit it!!!!

Cheeky F******!!!!!!

Not car related at all but still gets my goat - Took my 2 year old nipper for lunch yesterday in a posh high street restaurant chain and ordered mine and the missus meals, plus a pizza from the kids menu for him. While we sat there the waitress bought a few breadsticks for him to munch on which I thought was a nice touch...........UNTIL I got the bill and saw 99p added for the breadsticks which I didn't order. Not wanting to make a scene I paid for the meal but didn't bother with the tip. Stupid really, as I will never go back there.

I had a problem with a jag I went to Halfords for a cheap oil change instead of the main dealer. They changed the oil but after 2 hours could not start it I paid them and had the AA tow it to jaguar. They had it three weeks and tried everyting to start it. Then one day they got it started and apparently it filled the whole place with black smoke. They were embarrassed about not being able to find the fault and only charged me for the last couple of days £395 . Apparentle Halfords filled the oil too fast and it went down a vent pipe into the air intake. Jaguar had to strip everything down and clean out the oil.
Fortunately Halfords paid out from their insurance, but I leared the lesson to go to a specialist or main dealer for any repairs now and on MOT I always let the specialist take the car to a Mot garage to make sure he does any repairs. After 7 jags in a row I now run Mercedes for reliability.

Its worth just speaking to the MB tech guys, if you have sufficient knowledge to know the subject they will talk to you.

I have been speaking to one today on the programming of a SAM and very helpful they were,, that was MB SW
