yes I looked in the manual and it says it happens automatically if it detects the presence of a child seat.

You will have to have the fault code read out. there are software updates for this, also mods where sensors of odd makes have been fitted, unless the last owner had a child seat and the circuit has not re activated itself

Hi when i first picked it up the car was fine but my grandson sat in the front seat and put the seat belt on while i was reading how to use the computer and cruise etc, I reset the trip etc and the light never came on while he was in the car but when my misses got in the next day it came on straight away and whenever anyone sits in the seat now comes on every time.

Are you sure that it is not turned off in a menu, I do not know the menu on your car, so I cant comment further, maybe someone else will come on to the thread.

I did not see anything to do with the air bags in the menu's but as my grandson is only 3 and pressed every button on the car maybe he did something I didnt see, I thought it would be covered in the manual though if yiou can turn it off and on.

To my knowledge you can't turn it off. If the red light comes on on the dash, then there is a fault detected. Probably related to the sensors in the passenger seat and as Malcolm says, you need to get the codes read to know what needs fixing/replacing.
The fact that the "off" light comes on is probably just because the entire system is off. Its the big red light that's important, fix that and I suspect the other will go with it.

yes - it's the servicing that's important. Clearly if it broke down due to someone bodging something or the failure of an non MB part, that's another matter. Just make sure that whoever touches it is reputable and uses offical parts.
