Hi,

So on my car Mbenz W169 - A180 2005 , I have been using fully synthetic oil 5W40 , one mechanic told me that if I use semi-synthetic oil , car will be more quieter ?!
Well is that true, has anyone done this before ?!

Thanks !

Normal diesel noises won't change.

The viscosity of the oil doesn't change between synthetic and semi. If it's 5/40 then it's the same either way however OLD synthetic oil will maintain its properties better than semi synthetic and less sludge. So only makes a difference when the oil is finished!!

Use the owners handbook. Some diesels clatter a bit. If oil fixes that u likely have another problem to think about.

Just make sure its the correct spec.
Call you dealers, check owners manual.
synthetic or semi, the difference is in the name. Synth wont break down as much.
As for one making your engine quieter - horse poo - hope you are not using that mechanic.

5W/40 is fully syn. You can't get that in semi. I would assume he might mean use 10W/40 or 10W/30 semi syn. The heavier oil when cold helps to mitigate the higher clearances in a cold engine. It does make a small difference. When hot, no difference.

Castrol GTX 5W-40 Semi Syn - 1Ltr......?

But in general you are right. Heavier grade oil might mean less initial noise, but doesn't really make any difference.

Oil is there to lubricate, not as s noise damper.

Use the right grade of oil for your motor to ensure flow rates through narrow oil galleries are correct. Particularly so with any turbo installation.

It is also of some importance to make sure that the oil type conforms to the manufacturers specs. Even among the same manufacturer/same viscosity there are differences.

Castrol Edge v Castrol Magnatec v Castrol GTX all in 5w40 but Magnatec is not MB 229.51

Well i have used fully synthetic 5W40, i dont have owner manual, i dont know which oil should be used according to owner manual, i see in this webpage (https://oilincar.com/mercedes-benz/a-class/w169-2004-2012.php) , they recommend to use semisynthetic for 2005 , meaby for a 2005 car semisynthetic would be better, meaby in case of noise too

You could use semi or full synthetic. 5/30 or 5/40 or 10/40. (Depends how cold it gets where you live?
Just check whichever one you use carries an MB rating on its specification.
Though probably more important in an older car is to change oil regularly?

You don't have to have MB as a manufacturer spec as there are higher manufacturer specs from different makes .

Agreed you don't have to stick with MB spec but in the majority of cases any oil meeting a higher spec would automatically meet the MB spec.

The specification defines the minimum required parameters and whilst Porsche C30, dexos 2 or VW504/7 are high spec oils they do have differences. MB is a low SAPS spec whereas many oils are mid SAPS.

It's more of an issue with DPF than in petrol engines.

Even more reason to look for VW 507. 00 , it's better for the dpf .
