Hey all, Im new to this forum, some of you may have seen me on other Benz forums as kiwi bloke. Now I have a question and Im hopeing someone can give me some wisdom as my mechanic can not.

Recently I got the front exhaust pipes on my 230e replaced. From the manifold to the front muffler the pipes were replaced.

After this the exhaust makes an awful ringing / chattering noise when you accelerate. Bassically under high emmisions the exhuast rings.

We thought it was the front muffler so we removed it, its doing the same.

The noise comes from the following area. You have the two down pipes joining into one at a Y joint. There is then an S curve. The noise comes from each of these curves. Its very loud and annoying.

My thoughts: He has slipped slightly different diameter pipes into each other at each join to get a better join. COuld the "tail" inside the pipe at each of these joins be causeing the noise?

I believe he has used 1 3 quarteri inch for the down pipes and 2 inch for the for ONE "back" pipe.

Can anyone help me??

Im sick of being told by the mechanic that it is a unique problem with mercs and its "the joy of owning a german car"

thanks guys

Your Mercedes
A diesel
With 1 3/4" pipe and 2" pipe unless the pipe has 3mm wall thickness it will never join properly.
Assume the pipe wall is 1mm then you have a 4mm gap to fill. Hmmm!
It is what is commonly known as "blowing".

Take the car to another garage.
