merc 814 gearbox problems

hi i am having problems with my gear box. i only have 1st and reverse just recently baught it think oil has burnt out was wandering if anyone can help looking for a cheap way to fix it myself has anyone had the same problem?? cheers steve

What year is your 814 and is it a T2 (one with a bonnet) or the tilt cab truck - 2 very differant beasts and both 814 s!

I would guess it is a T2 and I have a feeling that the gearbox is worked by 3 rods (it is on my 410d) if so it could well be the selector as one does 1st and reverse, second one 2nd and 3rd and third one 4th and 5th - hope that makes some sense.

Is there oil in the box and did it ever have all the gears engaging? They are very tough boxes and not prone to failing, however if it newer and a Vario 0814 they are a differant story - ZF box not merc!

If you post the first 6 numbers of the chassis number I would have an idea of the vehicle type. Then I Might be able to help

hi thanks alot i will get back to you with chassis number may be a few days tho as we are a far walk away from internet at moment in spain ..... i think the oil has burnt out in the box all the gears worked fine for the few days after we baught it then it just went ncheers be back in a few days steve.

My my is on the selector, surely if the oil went out of it there would be a lot of noise and its very odd for 4 gears to fail without warning, do you know if had oil in to start with?
