Hope you can help me out here, we purchased a 1998 A140 last september as a trade in at the local garage

It has done 50000miles and appears to have been looked after by being serviced regulary.

The car was used for a short drive last sunday without any problems, went to use it on monday and the car would start then cut out immediately.

I managed to get it down to the local garage where they came back with 6 different fault codes

After further investigation they have diagnosed the ECU as having failed and are recommending that the only solution is to take it to the local merc dealer to get it replaced at the cost of around £1000.00 plus the vat.

what the garage has been told is the ecu has to be initialised by merc to set out the specific cars perameters and that an exchange unit is not available for this type of car.

Does anybody know any different or is this my only option

Thanks in advance

Cobblers - basically.
Assuming your ECU has failed, and it's a big if, there are plenty of firms around that fix them for around £200-£300. It's normally just a weak sloder joint or a blown resistor so NO DO NOT GO TO THE DEALER.

Find yourself a decent MB specialist. If you don't know of one, post where you are and someone will recommend one.
Assuming they agree with the diagnosis, there is a chap on here that repairs them and he'll no doubt introduce himself shortly. In the mean time, google "ecu repair" and you'll be spoilt for choice.

Well said. But after repair it may need to be re-coded,It depends on what needs repairing.
