According to my dealer, all Merc dealers are now setting up the new system which allows them to trace everything done to your car -in any Mercedes dealership- since it was new. Up until now, they could only access what had been done on my car at their dealership. Now they just tap in the registration number and everything on the car from new comes up. Very useful. :)

I was under the impression they could already do this. Not all dealers would do it as they probably didn't (don't) know how to drive their system. Vin No. is a better search as MB's tend to change Number Plates more than most cars

OK i have just posed this question to the son in law of my Gardener, who is the head mechanic at our dealers.

He said they have been able to this for years!

Not as simple as that. My local dealer is owned privately (by which I mean not by Mercedes) and there are several dealerships in the Group in different towns. Yes, they could access each others records but not the records of dealers in other Groups. Now they can all access each others records and so tell me if my car has had any work done on it in Cambridge, for example. Last week they could not do this. This week they can and I was there when they started the new system and checked out my car.

I gave registration numbers as an example of the system but. of course, you can equally use Chassis numbers/Vin numbers etc, if preferred or if you think the registration may have changed.

Merc commercial dealers can also do this. Anyone who has seen the list of faults for my van would appreciate that I could not possibly remember it all, but early this year I walked into my dealer and asked for the list and they gave it to me with no questions. My van has been worked on at 2 dealers that are not connected and everything showed up.

The interesting thing here is that if you are buying a secondhand Merc can you ask for the repair history to check if you are buying a lemon or does the data protection act prevent them from revealing the info to anyone other than the owner?

That's a very interesting question. I just got info on the car I've bought. This includes all warranty work done under guarantee and not just servicing or repairs. The Act says must keep confidential information about a client BUT does that include info about a client's car?? Need a lawyer??;)
