Merc radio wiring - no ignition feed

I have an E240 which had an Audio 10 Radio/CD. The CD went so I have replaced the unit with a Blaupunkt Travel Pilot E1.

The original harness is not fully wired and I cannot find a diagram to check what pins do what. If they match the wiring requirements of the Blaupunkt then I am missing the Gala/Speedo cable (Block A pin 1); reversing light signal (Pin 3) and, most bizarely, Ignition (pin 7).

I am really confused about the lack of a power feed from the ignition because the original radio switched off with the ignition - HOW? The Blaupunkt just stays on. Even worse, if the radio is on when I switch on the ignition the TravelPilot turns off.

I have seen Arnie's excellent posts on the speedo problem (but the www.siemensvdo.au.com link is no longer active) but can anyone advise me on the ignition problem of let me know the original connections on the A plug.

Finally there are two cables in the D plug (brown) in pins 9 & 10. What do these do? Steering wheel control? Should I replug the one in 10 to pin 7 to work with the TravelPilot E1?

I thank you in advance for your help.

The Audio-10 used the CAN-bus signals (the two wires you mentioned) to know when the ignition was on or off. This also transferred data to the in-dash display. (The CAN-bus is a digital, serial data-bus so don't connect these wires to anything else!!!)

You will need, therefore, to locate another ignition-type signal from elsewhere. The speed signal also requires either tapping into the CAN-bus (which is on your existing radio connector) with an (expensive- £100) adapter or if you are lucky, you may find the actual speed signal wire somewhere in the door sill. The CAN-bus adapter is probably the easiest solution, as it will give you all the signals you require.

There are some other posts from around July 04 regarding sat-nav and Becker units, which explain in more detail and give websites of where you can find the required parts etc.

Thanks for that Arnie. Especially the link to the Audio 10 wiring diagram. Very useful as a couple of the wires are different to that on the Blaupunkt.

I want to investigate the exisiting Gala cabling in the passenger sill (RHD car) to see if I can link off that. Do you have any information as to what the cable looks like (ie colours, diameter) and how you would recommend splitting off it.

The new receiver is working fine (good satellites) but I need the speedo to calibrate it.

Thanks again.

The wiring (if there) in the door sill (passenger side) will have a connector with the feeds from the ABS wheel sensors. One will probably go to the ECU and so there should be one or two spares. The attached photo was oprovided by another forum member and relates to a CLK. It may be the same for the E-class.

You should be able to use the positive from the cigarette lighter for a switched positive, just remember to put a small fuse in the line.
