An L reg SEL 300 3.2 55K on the clock, Leather and Mint condition throughout(Limited Addition) £7,800 ?

I would appreciate anyones response on value and reliability, I'm not good on Mercs and my Dad is interested. I'm struggling to match the age and price to get a good reflection of value. Anything unusual or of note about this model would be good or links to we sites.

Any info on this car at all appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a link to the site where it is for sale -or is it a private sale?

Its a lot of money for the age so he's buying it as a 'classic'. Even then it seems very pricey.
Ok the SEL is rarer but there will still be plenty around London I'd imagine. A quick trawl on autotrader and a 1998 300SEL - ok with 113k is on at £4k. The mileage is higher but it's a lot younger and £3k will fix up a lot of issues.

Low mileage always seems good, it it isn't necessarily. An engine run cold, running rich on choke and stop start can have a lot more wear than one with double the mileage clocked up on the motorway where it's basically idling, with minimal load, fully warmed up, so I would be drawn to how it runs, not what's on the clock.

Also a 300SEL is a bit underpowered. I can see - again on autotrader, an L reg SEL500 V12 with 140k. Being top of the range, a far better prospect as a classic, a V12 won't have got above idle for the most part so chances are that wear will be minimal if maintained properly. Its on at £4k so again, you'd have £3k for any little issues.

At the other end of the scale, for that money you could get a 1999 S which is the next model and better regarded as it was the first non barge S class.

Merc SEL 300 response

Thanks for the responses,

Everything makes clear sense in what you have said. It's a private sale so no links i'm afraid - i have found out it belonged to Harrods and the documentation has the El Fayed's name on it? But a lot of money in reality.

Thanks

It's far too dear, as mentioned.

Plus, just because it had Al Fayad's name on it, doesn't make it more valuable.

Just look at what happened to the one he had in Paris.....
