merc sprinter 311 oil in water??? Help please

Hi all hope you can help i just bought a 311 51 Reg sprinter and its done 170000 miles it all drives well its just that i checked the water tank and seen a small bit of oil in it ive also seen that has a new ish oil cooler on it is it pos that it had a faulty oil cool chaged ?? or do they suffer from head gasgets ? Any help will be good please .

i dont know if its the same but i have done a couple of oil coolers on ford tdci's symptons were oil in water but no presurisation of the system or boiling etc . so it could have had a new cooler but there was some oil left in cooling system. its difficult to get all the oil out . i tried dishwasher tabs in the cooling system and flushed out a few times and washed the header tank out as the oil allways floats to the top. or try some engine degreaser in the system run for half an hour and drain. hope this helps

Hi Shaun,

The CDI is not prone for head gaskets like the older model engine that was fitted in the sprinter, however that does not mean that the head gasket has not gone. Is there any water in the oil as well (oil will be milky). Is the engine smoking? It could be the oil cooler as well or a more serious problem or even the fact that someone previously has poured oil in the wrong place (don't laugh I have seen this before)

oil in header tank

Hi all no water in the oil and it has had a new oil cooler all seems fine drives nice and gos well no smoke at all i hope its just the faced its had an oil cooler fault before and its just some oil left over in the system so will flush it out and see . Good news on the pos if its no a common fault i hope .
