Malcolm's solution is good but I have found that at speed, the orange has a tendancy to slide up the bonnet and occasionally its made a bit of a mess on the windscreen. Truckers following get very upset when the orange flys off and hurtles towards them.
I've tried other fruit but nothing seems to have the appropriate adhesion.
I also considered going down the magnetic route. Broccoli has a good iron content but tends to crumble when you squish the star into it...

Anyway - 10 years merc ownership and I haven't lost a star yet. The old man has lost 2 or 3 but thats over 25 years. In a nutshell, it does happen but it's rare and they aren't expensive or hard to replace. I wouldn't worry about it.

On my old W123 I had the star stolen within 3 days of purchasing the car... Thats North London for you :(

On the W124 it was ok for all 4.5 years, then again, the car was mostly garaged and lived in a relatively tranquil part of the world.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
After someone messed with my star the other week I did toy with the idea of mounting a sensor on it, connected to a loud hailer in the engine bay which would shout "WARNING - A TWAT IS MESSING WITH MY STAR - BREAK HIS LEGS"

In order to have a sensor on the star the cage holding it must be insulated from the body,,once that is done it would be very easy to make it touch sensitive and blow the horn or relay a message (parrot)

Easy to fit, Memphis - provided the bonnet isn't too damaged that is.

There is a rotating piece on the lower end (the bit that will go under the bonnet)
It simply rotates a quarter turn and locks the star in place - you may find a pair of slip-joint pliers useful.

Becoming a common problem - the star issue, it seems. Some of us are working on a solution.
Will post up when we hit on the ideal remedy, bound to be popular i'll wager.

I wonder what income the Star generates for MB,, this has been an ongoing worldwide problem for 20 years, and MB must have sold hundreds of thousands of them

Part of me suspects thats the reason they dont vanish down into the bonnet when you turn the ignition off.
