Hi all,

Im new here and need help sorting out my old merc!
Ive been having a few annoying issues that I really want to sort out to bring the old girl back up to standard!

Firstly, I use this car everyday and cover about 1,100 miles a week on average - so she now has 206,000 miles and its a 89 year, 2.5 diesel and a manual. she does get regularly serviced but things are wearing out now!

Ok, the car has decided now it doesnt want to start on the key, I turn the key to the start position and all the lights come on BUT it will not turn over, if I put a wire from the battery to the solenoid it will start straight away! Its strange but It seems there is no power going to solenoid - how can i fix that! Its really annoying early mornings and in the rain!

Secondly, the merc apparently has an anti-jerk system? I think mine has died as it has become jerky when driving in lower revs pulling away! What causes that?

and a final run down on other annoying things - my rev counter has stopped working and my rear electric windows have also died!

Please help if you guys and girls can!

Thanks!

Matt

1. Maybe a bad earth from the starter? Check the earth - try earthing it only to the battery or main earth and turn the key - if it starts it must be bad earth. Otherwise starter is not getting juice so must be loose wire. Or something electronic is stopping the starter from operating and by linking it to the battery you are managing to bypass the problem.

2. I don't know about the "antijerk" system but maybe your engine mountings need replaced as that can cause shake.

3. Check haynes manual for circuits regarding electric problems.

Your Mercedes
2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
You do have a starter relay, if you have an imobiliser the starter relay circuit goes through it, starter relays do wear out, mainly dry soldering on the PCB.
