Behind the boot liner on the left hand side there is a narrow metal tube going into the bottom well. It is connected to what looks like an electric motor with a 5 pin plug connected. The motor is at high level hidden behind a stanchion. I’m at a loss what this is for, it appears to be redundant.

Electric roof motor? It has a white knob that you can pull out half an inch so set the close point I seem to recall. Don't mess with it without good reason as easy to upset roof ( someone had done that to mine thinking it was the electric ariel which was broken anyway)
