Hi all,

Ive been looking to buy a 1.8 1992 190e and wanted no what the 0-60 would be. At the moment I have a 2001 Renault Clio 1.2 16v and was wondering if it would be noticeably faster or not atall? Also wanted to no what problems i should be looking out for when buying?

Thanks Ash Robinson

I wouldn't recommend the 1.8, it's the slowest and yet also the most uneconomical of the lot.

2.0 is ok, but get yourself a 2.3-16 :)

I found the BHP can range from 109-118 for a 1.8 190E...

and the BHP for the Clio is 75BHP ..

This was all on the parkers site. No Doubt someone will come along and dispute it!

I would assume that with the 190 you will notice a difference in accleration compared to the clio. Is the 190 an auto?

As to problems re the 190E, I can't give you an answer on them as I don't know much.. I did at one stage look at them but ended up going for the E280.

Welcome to the forum anyhow :)

Thanks for the reply, as im 18 and only been driving a year i was looking at the 1.8 for the lowest insurance, will there be alot of difference between the 1.8 and 2.0 price wise.

It won't handle like the Clio (more roll, but noticeably rear wheel drive.)

Should be on a par if not slightly better from the lights.

Auto is a *lot* more preferable than manual. (easier to drive and sell on)

Try A Plan for insurance (or Adrian Flux).

Both specialise in the younger/more complicated end of the market.

Ash Robinson.

Insurance companies will sting you.... I'm only 20, female and driving a E280, and my insurance is still extreamly high. I don't remember a lot of difference price wise between the ones I was looking at, expect the cossie obviously!

It all depends on how much the seller wants for their car, everyone's different, the extras, miles, condition etc. Best thing is to have a look at insurance, and have a look at the 190s

Yer thats true my clio being smaller than the 190, i have also lowered the suspension on my clio so the haddlings pretty good. By changing the shocks and springs or adding a strut brace to the 190 would make much difference to the haddling.

I have already rung my insurance company about insuring the 1.8 and it was about £260 more, ill give them another ring and ask what sort of price they would want to insure the 2.0.

I didn't say it wouldn't be as good, just noticeably different to front wheel drive :)

You can get a sports pack for them I think, but don't quote me.

Cosworth made a fine example of these cars, and they will go round corners ;)

Mercs are generally pretty cheap to insure for young people.

When I went to view mine I almost laughed at the size of it and said 'no way I'm getting that tank!' Cut a long story short, I went home checked the insurance quotes and went back and picked it up the next day because the quotes were so cheap! :) Ended up getting a refund of few hundred quid, so car basically paid for itself. I was only 19 at the time.

One of my pals got a 2L 190 a few month later due to same reason. :D

If you've only just passed, I'd recommend sticking with a manual gearbox. Otherwise you'll forget how to change gear :)
