Careful with the wiring

Hi i am presuming your car has similar wiring to mine 1995 e280 try not to pull the loom around too much kink it etc because you will be a world of pain/expense .Mine was absolutely knackered the slightest movement and the insulation came off the wires
Hope this helps

hi killingtime88, i already came across this problem afew years ago with the cracked insulation on the loom when cahnging the plugs, caused a misfire as a result of it, manage to sort it though

any other advice on removing the cylinder head? tools and timing ect?

ive search on google and not really found anything, a nice guide would be handy

many thanks

No clue sorry

Sorry i've never changed the head on a Merc but the haynes should keep you ok
Just take it steady and think through what you need before you go for it.
The only thing i can offer is don't forget to drain the coolant down before you break the head seal otherwise water will get into the oil.also try not to get any old gasket in the oil galleries as this will more than likely block oil flow around the engine at some point, clean kitchen roll can be pushed into the oil galleries to stop any rubbishdropping in but be careful not to get any of that stuck in there either.
Not sure if mercedes/haynes recommend using any sort of gasket sealant on the head but if they do I only ever use hylomar blue not any of that silicone instant gasket stuff as that tend to break off in lumps and clog up the oilways.
Also if the gasket has gone, what caused it? .If it was overheating I would recommend getting the head checked for flatness at an engine shop they should only charge a tenner or so,if it is warped only skim enough to get the surface flat, but at that stage I would ask the question on here how much can be taken off safely without causing clearance issues valves to pistons.
As a rough guide and this is a rough guide I used years ago when building a souped up ford engine if the engine turns over ( by hand)with everything in place but no head gasket fitted the head gasket thickness will provide the clearance necesary. I am by the way an electician by trade and not a mechy the guys on here will keep you right

Some of the guys on here will reply to you soon they seem pretty clued up
Regards Paul
