Found this today while browsing.

Is my 1997 E300TD OBDII compatable? Obviously this is just an adapter, a fault code reader/resetter would also be required.

You have chosen a hard year, things all started to change from here onwards.

If you only want to do engine checks, this can be done with a simple diode and a swtch.
If your car is OBD11 compliant there will be a 16pin socket under the dash, but I do not think it started on yours till 99
to check this on an MB and you need to spend £2-3k

What checks can be done using a diode and switch? How are these checks done?

All faults in the engine and a few others can be read out by counting the flashes of the LED tool (easy to make) and cleared by a switch on the same device.

Do a serch on MB 38 pin read out, (I have a tool laying around somewhere.)
The fault codes and how to make the tool are out there.

Just to clarify the diode is in the form of an LED - the switch is a bonus you don't actually need it.

OBD2 is vary rarely used with Mercedes in this country - the data can be obtained through the 38-pin diagnostic port as a duplicate on these later cars. The US made it a requirement in '96 I believe - Euro SLs got it in 2001.
