Merc, 450 sl convertable with hard top, year 1978, what can anyone tell me about this model, and year, 70 k miles from new 2 owners, last one 20 odd years, 12 k spent on new wings etc, respray.

What would this be worth ? love the straight six 28 sl, but unsure about the v8... potentially more trouble ? is this just a big red elephant, or possible collectors piece in future ? me see it at half the money the man has asked me, saw this garaged beast whilst on a delivery, any advice good or bad wanted, thank's in advance. The 450SL is a real collectors car and, as such, price depends entirely on condition and provenance. If it's had the wings done properly (£12k sounds about right) then it may be a good 'un and 70k with two owners sounds spot-on. I don't think the V8 would be that much more of a liability than a six though it'd probably be harder to work on, kill front springs faster and understeer more

There are a few of these (SL / SLC) running around doing classic rallies - they're tough, quick & comfortable and should appreciate if bought at the right price & maintained scrupulously

The SLC isn't as well-loved but has more room and is much, much cheaper. Personally I'd get a V8 SLC, save £10k and spend it on petrol. Shouldn't take too long.....

What's he asking?
