I have a 1982 500sl. It has 80k on the clock and the gearbox is smooth in drive with no rough changes or clunks or slippage. The problem i have though is when i put the gear into 3 on the auto box it goes down to second gear and won't change to third gear. When i put the gearbox into the 2 position it selects first gear and won't change up 2nd gear till i put the car back into D where it driveds fine with no problems at all. The gearbox kicks down fine.
I sent the car into a specialist who basically said i need to overhaul the whole gearbox, basically a complete rebuild. But if it drives fine in D is it in need of an overhaul?
