Mercedes 560sel ECU...UPDATE...

I have a 560sel on a G plate 89/90.
I have been told the ECU is playing up. First of all it was running really rich, so the the mechanic turned down the pressures. But the problem is the ECU Ive been told. Now also I have a problem Starting when the engine is warm. From cold no problem, but after running it wont start until left to go cold. +- 5hrs!!!!
Would the ECU be causing this aswell?

I'm waiting for a second hand one from my garage.

Any sugestions would be appreciated.

Cheers, Bill.

UPDATE: Now desperately need ECU. Can anybody HELP, please. Now won't start at all......

Ciao.

It depends on your confidence level with your mechanic. It does strike me that if a temp sensor was on the blink, the ECU would think the engine needs a richer mixture - fine when it's cold but as you describe when it's hot. Probably won't start as it's flooded. I had a car that ran weak to the point of misfiring - mechanic adjusted it several times until there was nowhere left to go. Turned out to be a dodgy knock sensor. As we IT folk say GIGO - garbage in - garbage out. So, anything is possible, but I wouldn't spend any money on a new ECU until I was certain, or ensure you have some comeback if it turns out to be something else - will the garage take the ECU back if it doesn't cure it?

Thanks

Thanks for that info. The mechanic had the car for a few days checking all contacts, etc. Eventually came to the conclusion it was the ECU. It wasn't switching to the low pressure system when hot, so chewing juice big time, smoke everywhere. 5mpg. So he turned the pressure down on the high pressure system. Much better now. But starting getting worse. I'm sure its not flooding. The engine just turns, but doesnt take, whereever exelerator is positioned. When it does start after 4 or 5 hours, there is no indication that it has been flooded, no smoke or smell.

It seems the opposite actually.

Hes waiting for a second hand one off a wreck, quite cheap £70.00

I just hope it sorts it.

Thanks, Bill.

Give up the ghost...

Well it finally gave up the ghost this evening. Got in to come home from the office and it wouldn't start, had to get it lifted and brought home, alas.

Got a quote from Mercedes, £713.00 for a new ECU to be brought in from Germany!

Does anybody know of where I can get cheaper one, secondhand/rebuilt/whatever???

Any input would be much appreciated.

thanks, Bill.

Hi,

Try Mercman in Southampton, 02380 784444. They deliver nationwide, Mon - Fri.

Give them the part no. on yuor existing ECU to ensure you get the right one. PArt no is clearly stamped in white numbers on ECU, ten-digits.
