i recently purchased a merc 609d minibus 1987 d reg.
the vehicle was purchased from a coach operator and was maintained well through its life. however as the vehicle got too old for school contracts was parked up and left stood for almost 2 years!! On starting her up there was White smoke for around an hour whilst on tick over in yard, once we got it out of the yard and gave it a run the smoke turned from White to a very Pale Blue colour! On acceleration more blue smoke was produced on tick over/idle it was minimal.
We got the Minibus back to garage changed oil filter fuel filter and small filter inside glass, (they were filthy black) also changed oil with some fresh rock oil, however hardly any difference at all, we was also told about lucas oil stabliser which is supposed to free off pistons valves etc, we put this into the oil and the smoke cleared instantly we ran it up the street and back and hardly any smoke even on acceleration!
Until next morning came to start it good old bluey white smoke again, we took it for an emmissions test and it failed, its non turbo so you are allowed 2,50m however we averaged at 3.05m. Whilst emmission test was being carried out when revving the engine the smoke made our eyes sting and water, however did not smell directly of oil nor fuel! then we was told to try injectors so we have taken them out and each nozzle is badly gunged up in fact you can hardly see the holes they look like half flattened sand castles!
We are taking them to be tested and overhalled! Could this be the cure or could it be more involved Please let me know asap! Drivin me Mad! Thanks

I don't know if the 609 is the same, but my 410D has 3 fuel filters:

- main filter
- small inline filter mounted on teh chassis between fuel tank and main filter
- Gauze filter in the fuel tank pick up unit.

I had all kinds of fuel problems until I found & replaced the inline filter and cleaned out the one in the pickup unit which is accessible through a panel in the floor above the tank. The whole assembly releases via a bayonet fitting - when I removed it the gauze was thick with black gunge.

Might be worth a look, although from your description I imagine the injectors are going to have something to do with it!

Cheers,
Bruce

If your injectors are badly gunked up their spray pattern will be crap so the fuel won't atomise properly and as a result it won't all burn. This would result in black smoke though.

All from memory here so dont shoot the messenger!
Rack sticks in pump causing over fueling, also I think there is a diaphragm on the pump and if it's stood for some time it could have perished and causing over fueling.
There you go.

follow Up!

thanks will check it out!
vehicle was taken to diesel specialist yesterday, they reckon its something to do with the fuel side of things and not engine!
They said it can't be Rings/Bores Etc as it starts first crack doesnt run lumpy and there is absolutely no back pressure, they also eliminated the head and head gasket no bubbles in water etc not loosing water or oil. It has Plenty of power and is not sluggish etc!
Been advised to clean out fuel tank and lines and put fresh fuel in.

On emptying the fuel tank the fuel was a lime green colour with the odd black strand in it which dissolved in your fingers when rubbed together.
Gonna fill up with fresh fuel and see what happens will let you know!

Anymore Suggestions????
thanks

Lime green you say? Sounds like tractor diesal has been used. I had a similar prob after using tractor diesal in the Republic of Ireland for an emergency top up.

Hold on.
Aren't fuel additives for diesel green in colour, becuase agricultural diesel is dyed red/pink.

I'd be more worried about the black gunge.

It's very likely that having sat for so long without being run that something has gunged up and stuck. Sounds definately like over fueling.

Lots of white smoke for a long time on startup probably means that one of the glow plugs are on the way out. A cold cylinder will just chuck out atomised diesel until it warms through from those next to it.
