Hi,

I tried starting my car yesterday after leaving it parked up for a couple of hours and the car was completely dead by that i mean i insert the key in and you hear a slight clicking sound but the engine doesn't turn over at all but all the lights on the dashboard are on. The starter motor was changed last year too. The car bump starts fine.

This has been an on going issue for sometime now, periodically the car use to stop starting but if i left the key out for a few minutes and then put it back it and then tried the car it would start fine.

Any ideas of what this could be please?

Check the engine earthing strap, it could be intermittently increasing resistance through a bad connection. Sorry, that's all I can think of at the moment, somebody else will pipe up I'm sure.

I don't much about these engines but where is the earthing strap located and how do i check it?

Have a look on Google, an easy way is next time it happens, bridge the negative terminal to the battery directly to the engine with a jump lead. Make sure you get a good contact, clean the engine contact point with a wire brush first.

No, it's not bollox. You can apply a 12v from the battery to the positive terminal on the solenoid with a jump lead. This will operate the starter, however the risk of shorting is high unless done V carefully.

Hi,

Apologies for my rude language in my above post i was just angry, this car has been a money pit already, last time the timing chain tensioner needed replacing which cost an arm and a leg and there's a lot of other minor little faults here and there too however that was no excuse for the way i cursed on the forum so please accept my apologies. Just a little update i bump started the car today and took it for a little drive and not the turns over but it's very sluggish and it feels like the car has no power. Do you guys still reckon it's the starter, how easy is it to replace and can it be done from over the top or does part of the sub frame need to be dropped for access?

Thanks
