A Very strange thing happened the other day.

Had to take my son out in my new car, (8 Months old) He usually just goes in a Mama's and Papas Baby seat on the back seat (Rear facing)

However he is soon about to change this and have been thinking of getting the Merc Baby seat with the Transponders in it that switches off the Airbags when in the front seat.

This is the strange thing, cos i was in the car on my own with the nipper, i thought i would put him on the front seat, as the baby seat at the mo is rearward facing i didnt think that this would be much bother as the airbags in an accident isn't going to hit him, its going to hit the back of the baby seat. so straps him in and get driving down the road and then notice that the Pass Airbags Off Light is alight telling me that the Pass Airbags are switched off!!

This Mamas and Papas baby seat was included with the Pram set that we bought all i had to pay extra was £15 for the Car seat Base. So why the hell am i looking at a £295 Mercedes Baby Seat with these special Transponders built in to switch the Airbags off for!! when this Mama's and Papas does the same job!!

Is this suppose to do this with any baby seat or is it just the Mercs Baby seat that does this special trick.

I need to know asap as i need to buy the next stage seat pretty soon but dont really want to shell out £295 for the merc seat and its Fabric is pretty disgusting as well!!

2 inches from your rear bumper
It would appear the car is more intelligent than you are - never put a child seat in the front seat of a car with an airbag! The passenger bag is much larger than the drivers, and could break the childs neck.

Cheers for your help. (NOT)

The Pass airbag light was ON with a Mamas and Papas Baby seat not a Mercedes Seat. Should this still happen??

All i want to know from anyone on the forum is if they had experienced this happening in there Mercs as i need to buy the second stage seat and dont really like the material of the Mercedes seat and would rather buy a nice upholstered seat without losing the safety!!

But thanks ever so much for your help. Your a Pure Genius!!

the safest place for mercedes munchkins

is still in the back seat, in the middle if you have a 3-point belt there. If you have isofix fittings, consider the Britax Isofix stage 2 seat. The safest fixing system by far. There are other manufacturers of course, Wavo, Kindermuhl, all sorts.
We plumped for Britax isofix, as it goes into our new Skoda on the isofix bit, and into our C class using the 3 point belt. It also fits the front seat of our SL as well.

Hi Myros

Many thanks for your help, we went off to our local place this afternoon to have a look and the lady in there giving the advice out was rather digusted with Mercedes for making such an invention!! Telling me there is only 1 place for the Nipperoo and that was on the back seat of any car, no matter how many fando gando gadgets you have installed in ya car.

I felt that i had been told and not only bought one seat but two seats, one for my Missus new A class when that turns up.

When she showed the pics of what an Airbag can do to a nipper, my god that is shocking!! Earlier posts on this thread was telling me the same and i was a little naive to it all and wondered what the fuss was all about.

But the look on that womens face when i said i had a new Mercedes and about the Gadget that knocks out the Airbags, She just said it werent worth the risk, She would rather not sell me a seat at all if it was going on the front seat.

Didnt even realise that everywhere reccomends that Child seats are used til 11 years old!!

Anyway got 2 nice Plain Black Britax's to go on the Leather unpholstry, which also reclines so nipperoo hasnt got his head in his lap when he falls asleep.

Nipperoo approved highly by sleeping all the way home in it!!

Thanks for all your help guys!!

hope you dont have rear airbags?

just kidding. the merc seats you were quoted for have ISOFIX fittings. you can get merc seats without for a bit less.

still, happy travelling!

make the Merc seats anyway, it's the same seat with a different fabric and without the transponder. I walked out of Mamas and Papas in disgust when I found they don't stock isofix seats. We ended up sourcing them on the web, at £125 each, as opposed to about £175 retail at Hellfords et al.

ISO Fix seats

I've just been reading the previous posts.
I have just bought a S500 with rear side airbags and have the pending arrival of a new born in a few weeks. Does anyone know if the S500 has ISO FIX seats in the back? how do I find out?

ISOFIX fittings will be in your car. look in the rear seat base for some metal bits the clamps on the child seat go onto, should be situated near where the seat belt buckles are. and you should have some fittings around the rear parcel shelf area, behind and to the top of the rear seats, for the top straps to fasten to. just look over the back of your seatbacks.

If you dont have any fittings, then it isnt equiped with ISOFIX fittings. They are usually marked, but any dealer will show you where they are if you call in at one.

Check the handbook too.

you can also check it out with Britax

on their website or by phone. they have a big list of which cars do what and to whom.

I've also got rear side bags, in my W211, and have been worrying about that. Anyone know if they are likely to cause a problem with a child in a rear-facing seat?

I also heard that ISOFIX fittings are now required on all new cars sold in the UK.

I tried now to fit a Chicco baby seat on the front seat of a W210 but the airbag light did not stay on :(
I'll have to enquire with DCSA what to do with 6 weeks to go as the SO will be driving alone with the baby and doesn't prefer not being able to see the baby (when it is facing to the rear on the back seat)

unless you can disable the airbag

you really will have to carry the munchkin in the back. Airbags and tots don't mix.

don't worry, I had no doubt in my mind about that. I will only put a babyseat on the front if it deactivates the airbag as well.

My biggest worry is not that mom and baby get into an accident, I worry more about putting the baby on the rear seat and the car gets hijacked with the baby still in the car without the jack knowing it - not all hijackers suddenly get a sense of responsibility when this happens.

If the nipper is in the front passenger seat, there is huge temptation for the driver to attend to the little 'un whilst driving. And that's a massive distraction and raises the chances of an accident by a large amount. You are probably safer making a mobile phone call whilst driving after 10 pints of special brew than you are driving with your newborn in the passenger seat next to you.
