Please can you help! My elderly father has just bought above model second hand and it had no manual with it. He is finding the locking/immobiliser procedure in particular very confusing. Is there anyone out there who could spell out to me what you have to do? Whatever the dealer said to him has led him to leave the key in the ignition when the car is left in the garage! I personally have no experience of Mercedes and the procedure the dealer allegedly told him bears no relation to anything I have ever had to do on any car I have owned. Many many thanks to anyone who can help.

You will get help later in the day, you should though order a handbook from MB there are so many nice features on the car that he will miss out on.

I'm not sure what the dealer told him, but they are pretty conventional, in terms of locking anyway.
Around that time, there were 2 different setups.
1) Conventional key. So a normal key used to lock and unlock the doors and start the engine. There was no immobiliser.
2) Remote immobiliser - These had a plastic box with a flick out key and a red and green light, both on the door handle and on the interior mirror. On these, the key works in the normal way and the remote is a single button Infra red setup with recievers in the driver's door handle and in the interior mirror. Point the transmitter at either and press the button. Red light indicates locked and immobilised, green unlocked.
Some also had an integrated alarm but not all.
In any case, there is no reason to leave the key in the ignition!

Dealer has probably said to leave it in the ignition to re-sync it to the car

Would be relevant on the newer keys (post 99 electronic type) but not on the older flick variety. The newer ones also need to be in the ignition from time to time to charge up the transponder for some reason but again I don't believe such a thing was necessary on the flick key.
I've heard many many stories about the remote not syncing but nothing about immobiliser issues on those keys.

Hopefully all will be well now, but if you do need the hard copy of the manual do let me have your E Mail so we can make arrangements.

Hello Daughter

I have a 96 c class elegance with immobilizer and remote locking as described earlier. You need to note with this type that when the key is removed from the ignition, after about one minute the car will immobilize itself and will refuse to start. When this happens just lock and unlock again (using the remote), and all will be fine.
Hope this helps
Roy.

I believe its a very long time. Use it once every 6 months or so and it should be fine. There have been stories where keys haven't worked and the dealer has advised to leave them in the ignition overnight and they've come back to life.
