I have a 1997 - P Plate Mercedes C200.

There is a switch beside the automatic gear stick. 2 buttons - one with S and one with W. What does this mean ??

I have a 'gut' feeling you're still a bit confused with this (though I could be wrong of course!)
Every now and again in their wisdom MB change these letters you refer to, from Standard, Sports, Summer, Economy, Winter etc.
Basically, 'S' mode (doesn't matter what it's short for) changes up the gear ratios at a slightly higher speed than the other mode ('E' or 'W' or whatever). So when 'E' is 'economy', they reckon you'll save a little fuel in the long run because it changes up at slower speeds, though this is debatable among members. When 'E' was changed to 'W', or 'Winter', this means exactly the same - i.e. the gears will change up at slightly slower speeds, which is beneficial on slippery roads in winter.
Still confused? In short I think most members would recommend you use 'S' mode all the time, except on slippy roads.
Hope this makes some sense to you!
Cheers, Tom.
