Mercedes C230 Kompressor - Performance & Economy

I am very interested in purchasing a C230 Kompressor budget dictates maybe a 1996 - 1998 model, what are real world economy and performance like?
Is there anything I should look out for especially on this model. i've seen previous questions on this model but no replies, anyone out there???

C230 K has the best performance (o-60) out of all the W202's (apart from AMG versions )

C230K has best fuel consumption as well!!! shame its a cylander or 2 short

Here are figures from Parkers Guide, that Shude has posted in an earlier thread that discussed the relative merits of C230K and  C240.

Shude was saying that he can usually get about 30mpg on his drive to work and back.

Looks like I don't need to say anything then :biggrin: ...

If you get one, try to go for facelift models (aug 1997+ I think), you get updated bumpers, slightly updated grill, updated headlights/taillights, sideskirts, interior updates including steering wheel and white dials on the sport models.  Lots of stuff under the skin too.  I've got a 1998 c230k/auto/sport and it's a great car IMHO.

One thing to remember with the c230k is the use of super unleaded with it .

Filling up the tank will cost you £51.93 with super unleaded.

Filling up the tank with premium unleades will cost you : £48.68

so, you have to balance that extra £3.24 per tank of fuel.

That's very interesting, because I've never used super unleaded!

il scan in the page from the manual that goes over fuel for the diferent engines , im sure it says that in an emergency situation when full throttle is not being sued that it can be filled with 95 but , it should be 98.

Thankyou all for your replies, I am determined to get one, but my better half says "they're an  old mans car"
How can I convince her I am making the right choice?
She likes Nissan 200sx, Alfa 156,Peugeot coupe, very nice I know but not good long term prospects as I tend to keep my cars about 5 years.

Old man's car?  I'm only 24, I was 23 when I bought my c class!  Nissans, Alfa Romeos and Peugeots weren't on my shortlist to be honest, and I didn't want a bmw either.  You will find the c230k to be sporty enough to keep a grin on your face/keep up with the boy racers and classy enough to chauffeur your mum somewhere posh.  You really can't compare it to the likes of Alfa, after you've closed the door on either car you'll see the difference in quality between them.

They only look/feel like an old man's car if you go for the wood finish interior - imho !!

Go for an Esprit or Sport class if they're available.

Wish I had a car when I was 20 .  I was just an impoverished student back then and even the bus tickets seemed expensive (they were!).  Little did I know that about 3 years later I'd be shrugging off AMG styling packs and million pound service bills.

easy fixed get an SLK  i did and have a cheap seat / Jetta 16V for when I need the space.
