I've got exactly the same model. S switch = Summer W switch = Winter.
Basically in W the car pulls away in second gear ie in snow and gear changes up at lower revs.

I always drive in W as find it a smoother drive, particular in a que it dosn't jerk forward as much.

To change the settings between S & W this can only be done when you have the car in reverse gear. Simply by pressing the switch in Drive or Park will make no difference.

Mine changes in Park, I can feel it change from 1st to 2nd as I press the switch. As for the key a Mercedes dealer is the place to go. The ones on Ebay are of no use.

You can change from W-S in P,N,R;) , used it on W yesterday and yes a much smoother ride no jerking from 2-3.

mine is now overdue an oil/filter change by 3k oops!! so will do a change next week with some cheaper oil, will then do a run to newcastle and back about 600miles and do another oil filter change but fill it with the good stuff mobil1

Sorry but no.
You may only 'feel' the immediate difference in R (although I've noticed it on other settings) but it's simply a signal to the computer to change the behaviour of the box so can be switched at any time.

W is smoother but only because it allows more torque slip which in turn uses more fuel (though perhaps minimal). I used to keep it in S unless I was in a traffic jam in which case I'd switch to W to both smooth it out and also as it sits in 2nd, crawling along in traffic is faster so I don't need the throttle as much.

I was told that mobil 1 (altough good oil) was too thin for your C250 and was a waste of money!. I was recommend fuch oil from euro car parts.

Back to the original question of W/S use, though I have only had the V8 for a couple of days. The driving in W is made much more relaxing, in S I can spin the wheels so easily and subconsciously think about it. In W I can drive without thing about it. If I need first, I can kick it down.

For me having two cars that have this huge appitite for rubber it does help, on smaller engines one does not get this problem.
